So, there is a politically incorrect way to play PCs in DND?

I must not have gotten the memo. Could you forward it to me? :p

I agree with you. And it's the second comment I've seen just today on this board that implies there is a "right" way to role play (this was the other one: http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=174367 ).

And also the second time today I agree with you. The stars must be aligned. Maybe it's Pluto's loss of planetary status :)

What if the bard was a paladin instead?

Would this cross the line? Would he have "willingly commited an evil act?

Using real life as a basis for handling alignment issues is something that will only cause problems. Alignment is an game feature that is very subjective and thus people look at things from different perspectives.

The crux of my point was the same as yours below.

That is the basis of the statement.

To have any conclusion that 3.5 is not about cooperative play is really missing all of the mechanics and award ssytems that are in game.

I am not talking about role-playing specifically I'm talking about player to player interaction.

Read the last two paragraphs of my first post to see where i am coming from on all of this.

When role-playing causes player issues then there is something fundamentally wrong with the way things are being handled at the table and the game will degenerate to the point where it is no longer "fun.

How is a character supposed to react when her party seems incompetent and suicidial?

You are a bard...a charismatic character. You should have taken control of the group, calmed their bickering and gotten things done efficiently. Granted, efficiency is a very lawful concept when done correctly.

I've been in several groups like this before, where everyone has their own idea about how things should be done. LAst session, one character walked off to complete something he had wanted to do for a while, going into a potentially hostile area. Others were screwing around in some magical air elevator and said "Don't worry about him, we know where he is going." I went with him. Two L3 characters facing off against an earth elemental. The DM asked them how long after I left did they come to find us. "10 minutes or so...". By then the elemental was dead, and both of us were almost there as well.

You're a bard. Diplomacy, stopping the bickering and making people work together is your forte. Being out for yourself because the rest of the group is uncooperative is definitely neutral and is pushing evil. Your DM probably put you at Neutral as he sees thats where you should have been to start with. Being neutral you will be more free to be out for yourself. Accept it and wait for the entire party to self-destruct for being uncooperative.

Good points.

But I think this outlines what at least some of are seeing (or at least reading into) the posts - that this is really a matter of how the players are behaving and not necessarily how their PCs would react. While the two are inherently tied together the fact that a group is indecisive in its actions speaks louder about the players' gaming habits.

Even PCs that do not "get along" can work together in a decisive manner if their players want them to.

This reminds me of that thread not too long ago about the group in the "shelter" and how long (real time) they discussed what they were going to do until the Dm finally ruled that their magical shelter vanished becasue the duration of the spell finally wore off.

I'll answer your question after you answer my earlier question.

Would you have ruled that it was an evil act for the Dwarf to grab her legs when she stood on him because he might drag her under?

The mechanics allow for cooperative play. They do not force it.

The award system is transparant to PC decision making. The players might know about the award system, but the PCs should not.
