Hmm, according to a few google searches, liver-stealing crows might be to blame...

I've seen that, too. One would think that if a crow flew down and pecked out your liver that exploding would not be the way you'd die. How the heck does the bird even know where a toads liver is? How strange.

No, the crows first drop the bombs that explode the toads. Then the livers are much easier to find.
