Familiars much cooler than I ever realized!

Familiars are great. My Transmuter/Loremaster has a pseudodragon familiar who routinely carries around a couple of wands. While the familiar has a pretty low chance of activating them since my Loremaster only has 2 ranks in UMD so far (only a 1st level Loremaster), often she spends every round attempting to activate the wand of magic missle. If the master goes down, she can use the wand of CLW to stablize him. Etc, etc.

Ah, now I remember the build I was hoping to try out once... It was a Loremaster with a Quasit or Imp Improved Familiar. Natural Int of 10, has as many magic item slots as a PC race, can talk, has hands, and can have ranks in UMD. Flies perfectly too.

Yup, a very good combination. Imps (superior to quasits, IMO) are also great familiars for Arcane Tricksters.

Heh. With only 2 ranks, I would rather let her give you a potion instead! :D

Good chance to have something go wrong there still!

Gimme a break, I just leveled to 8th. Haven't had much of a chance to sink lots of ranks into it yet. :p

Soon I'll have quite a few more ranks. She does carry a few potions also. And a pseudodragon's poison, while not a very high DC, is really nice at my current level. Especially since the DC goes up as I go up in level.

What I was really saying is, that sorcerers cannot use metamagic rods of quicken spell (unless you use some sort of house rule or Arcane Preparation). ;)

Typical tactic: First send in about 20 summoned ravens augmented with Augment Summoning and Animal Growth, next comes the druid with Produce Flame and the Mages Familiar with Vampiric Touch...

The only problem with familiars is that if you take a prestige class, those levels in the PrC won't give your familiar more abilities.

Unless you create a specialist 'Familiarist' PrC just to let someone get more mileage from their familiar, and to play catch-up on those lost levels of development!

In fact, it's usually pretty much unimportant, as familiars get all of the stuff they need by level 5. The levels thereafter are surely nice, but everything but necessary.
