It depends on the campaign.

The current one that I'm running depicts the characters as the nobility of a xenophobic nation under the control of a LE god of war.

The next one will most likely be run in a country that is "controlled" by a NG Goddess of healing, so Her followers are a bit more accepting of other races besides humans.

Well, with seven core races and four party members, it's kinda hard to have a "good balance". :p

So I thought about characters that have been played by my players during the last few years, and I voted for a good balance + a few monstrous characters.

I put mostly humans, elves, and half elves, but while technically correct that's not perfectly accurate.

My current game has

1 Human
2 Elves that were humans
1 "Real" elf (who probably won't be playing with us for a while)
1 Robot
1 Ved Qayat

Hmm, let me think. In one of my weekly games, the party consists of 2 humans, 1 ex-human (now feytouched due to ingame events), 1 halfling and 1 dwarf. In my other weekly game, the party consists of 5 humans and 1 half-aquatic elf. In the games I've played, the trend has mostly been a party that is at least 50% human, with a representative or two from other races. Oddly enough, the all-dwarf party has yet to materialise..I half-expected it now dwarves are so kickass at everything! ;)

If you make the sum of all the games I played in or mastered, it's mostly humans (7), elves (5), and half-elves (2). A couple of halflings and dwarves (one of each were reincarnated in human and elf, respectively, sigh), one gnome, no monsters or half-orcs.

In the game I'm currently playing in, we have:

1 half-orc
1 elf
1 spirit folk
1 nezumi

In the game I'm running, we have

2 humans
1 dwarf
1 elf

Balsamic Dragon

I voted "Almost all Elves & Half-Elves" because those two have been the most frequent races found in my games. However, in my experience, most of my players look for an opportunity to "avoid humans at all costs" just to play someone cool. For the most part, I don't care; I'd rather have a player playing the character he wants than reflect the demographics of the area they're playing (adventuring groups tend to be a mix of everything in the setting).

For example, in my Calimport (FR) campaign:
  • male tiefling shaper
  • male half-orc monk of the long death
  • male human sorcerer (with blue hair, just for weirdness)
  • female drow elf cleric of lolth
  • male wild dwarf rogue/fighter

That happened *after* I reminded them that (my particular) Calimport has the following demographics: 91% humans, 4% halflings, 3% half-orcs, 2% others.
