I voted Infiltrator, purely from thinking back on the classes. I don't really use advanced classes and prefer the GT method.

Thinking back on the classes the first thing that came to mind was the Infiltrator's improvised weapon abilities and I liked the flavor of that.

I've got to go with Soldier, not so much from a conceptual viewpoint as from a "played and loved" viewpoint. Specifically, a character who had 10 levels of Soldier in a D&D/Iron Kingdoms campaign.

Anyone who thinks d20 Modern classes can't hang with D&D classes hasn't seen a 10th level soldier direct a full metal fantasy battlefield. Bards, eat your hearts out. Did I mention my auto-confirming crits for the rounds I'm not using Tactical Aid? :]

I enjoyed the Soldier not as a damage-dealer (he ended up being probably third or fourth in the party) but as a highly survivable leader/support character.

The thing I like *best* about the Soldier is his tactical aid talent - a wonderful ability. I understand that there was some errata to reduce its power, but we found it worked fine as is (if necessary just upgrade the underwhelming Bodyguard level 10 ability to match the soldiers tactical aid)

Chalk up another point for the Infiltrator. There's just something about the Rogue-ness of it that appeals to me... Oh, yeah!

The Rogue-ness. :D

Investigator pulls a very close second. Put 'em together and... wow.

I'm a little surprised to see no love whatsoever for the daredevil. Granted, the BAB is too low for someone who should be a bit more rough-and-tumble, but the hit die and the defense bonuses together make for one tough nut to crack. And I like characters that remind folks that a good action scene--one that really keeps you on the edge of your seat--should be as much about executing outrageous stunts as it should be about attack and damage rolls.

Is the Daredevil the best we can get for a wheelman-type class?

Wow. Really? My guys can't stand the Daredevil or the Infiltrator. The Daredevil is pretty much referred to as "the ability score-boosting advanced class", as that was about the only thing people saw as a reason to take it. Everything else was stuff that most other classes could do or approximate, or abilities that just didn't stand out enough. (I can't really confirm this, as nobody voluntarily played one in a game.)

And the Infiltrator just didn't have enough flash for my guys -- improvised weapons don't really work that well with that Smart Hero BAB, and not enough real coolness that made you noticeably better at infiltrating. I think they wanted something like a "Hide in Plain Sight" ability -- spend an action point to hang from the ceiling while guards walk by underneath you or something cool like that -- or class improvements to Knockout Punch that made the Infiltrator a good sneak-attacker (or even getting Sneak Attack, for that matter). They just didn't think it got enough in the way of things that they would use, and that weren't effectively duplicated by skills and feats.

Again, curious, not arguing. Everybody's game is different, and I might well have made a game for which those two classes just didn't fit.

I haven't played a lot of Modern, but what I have played used the Field Scientist and I loved it. I like the versatility of all those skill points and the character was a fun mix of high-tech and obscure lore knowledge.

Well, as I have been discussing in another thread here, what good is a wheel-man in a system where vehicle combat is broken up into 50 foot squares and requires battlemaps that don't exist?

I have not had the chance to play a lot of modern for one reason or another, but the one time I did i had a Fast/Smart/Field scientist. I got lucky and had an 18 in both dex and int. I loved it. Not only was i the ultimate support guy off the battle field but i was also kicking major ass on it.

The soldier definately rocks. It's nice that they've got powerful ally-support abilities on a full-on warrior, rather than passing them off to sub-par combat classes like they do in D&D.
