I think the popularity of dwarves and dislike of Elves is due to their in-game design factors rather than what people think of the races in general. Dwarves are probably the best of the non-human races. Who doesn't love more Con and many people write off Charisma regularly. Elves on the other hand lose Con and when your primary class is wizard so HPs are already a problem, the low popularity of elves doesn't suprise me.

I think Elves are a fascinating race, but always have difficulty figuring out why an Elf would hang around all these humans who are just racing to get things done. I see the elf saying "This problem will go away in 20 years anyway why worry about it?". This obviously doesn't work well within most D&D games...

I gotta say that the rules aspects of dwarves almost makes them a no-brainer decision. Certainly the most popular race (aside from humans) at my tables.

+2 Con, penalty to (often) dump stat, bonuses to saves, darkvision, weapon familiarity, maintain base speed, stonecunning, and stability. What's not to like?

Makes a great fighter, barbarian, ranger, monk, cleric (if you don't need turning so bad), or rogue. Even druid (probably hill or cavern based) if you were keen.

Another dwarf fan here. I've been toying with the idea of playing a dwarf for my next campaign character, although I haven't settled on a class yet (paladin, perhaps?).

Hey, I start playing my Dwarf Paladin tomorrow. :D I have high hopes for him.

Dwarves, though were WotC to go back to distinct Bilboish hobbitses and Kronin Thistleknot's kender instead of the bland mishmash that is the 3e halfling, I might go for one of them. Anyone but elves, who are only useful as dragon snacks.

I hate elves,i love dwarves and the game mecanics mean nothing to me when choosing character and/or race.Well, dwarves goes after humans of course but never, and i mean never, elves.

Hey, what's wrong with elves?

Elves are dragon snacks? I bet my elf could mop the floor with your dwarf.

Seriously, yes, I did vote for elves. I don't imagine the elves in my campaign to be exactly like Tolkien elves, but they're fairly close.

Dwarves would be my second choice, though. ;)
