Halflings are the most fun to RP, esp. if you roll minimum height during character generation (2'10", in case you're wondering...) for a high charisma character. And they make better casters than elves or gnomes do after level 3 or so (size bonus to hit, to AC, racial save bonus, dex bonus is fabulous -- and no con penalty, compared to elves who likely won't be using their big physical weapons at that point anyway and gnomes that get cooked by the first fireball that heads their way). It's not like the mechanics give anybody int/cha bonuses anyway.

Unfortunately, my little guy has to pack his own gear (str 15), but he always rides in somebody's backpack, which saves a bit on the stabling fees...

::Kaze (would, barring humans, take Dwarves for most any fighting class, though.)

My favorite nonhuman race is the gnome. Their interests remind me of mine(I have very diverse tastes). That love was cemented by the Gnome Professor variant in the Complete Book of Bards in 2nd ed. My next favorite race would be Dwarves, followed by Halfling and Elves(about equal). I'm not really much for the half breeds, though I liked half-elves in 2nd ed.

My Vote

Half Elves! Particulary Half Wild Elves or Half Kagonesti if playing Dragonlance. Half Orc is also okay. I can empathize with them being white/hispanic and never fitting in with either culture well. After that I dunno. Dwarf is lowest on the list since to be quite honest....I have never played one. It's the image of the "clank, clank, I'm a tank" that I think has shyed me away from them.

Dwarves, though were WotC to go back to distinct Bilboish hobbitses . . .
Just borrowing part of your post to express my sentiments. In 3.x I've played all but halflings and half-elves, but I really have nothing against either of them, and will probably get around to playing them soon.

Got a dwarf paladin concept waiting for the right campaign (hoping howandwhy99 catches the hint).

Gnomes Rock

Elfs suck

Dwarfs and Half-Orcs are okay

and whats a halfling? I though Bilbo was just a really short human

What's not to like about short, bearded, lawful good asskickers who swing axes and drink lots of beer?
Exactly.

But mine tend to use warhammers. Or fists. Or any handy halfling will do for a club in a pinch.

The only race I don't have a lot of use for is the half-orc. I like Gnomes, but I have issues with them as written. So I rewrote them a bit for my game. Now I like them a lot. Just not as much as the mighty Dwarves.

Definitely gnomes. I've just always had a great time playing gnomes.

Dwarves run second place--a perennial favorite.

Elves can be cool, but not many people roleplay them in any interesting way.

Halflings in 3E tend to be run as diminutive humans. Exceptional, for certain, but not distinctive.
