Not necessarily. Polling companies can make quite reliable predictions based on much smaller sample sizes than that, and experiments in the human sciences typically use much, much smaller samples.

Nor is this likely the only method of testing and sampling that WotC is using.

That said, there are definitely some potential issues with the way this sample is collected, given that it is highly self-selected and heavily skewed towards users of DnDBeyond. I would assume that WotC, not being idiots, are aware of this.

I don't understand that commentary... do you want to imply that 46k out of 10 Millions or so is bad?

As someone with a bit of mathematical background, I can say: 46k is a great amount of responses.
