Fighter/Cleric or Fighter/Templar

Hi all!

My 6th level fighter is planning on going a bit divine within the next few levels. I was looking at a few classes and wondered, fighter/cleric or fighter/templar?
What do you think?

Well, you do need Knowledge religion 8 ranks for Templar. That's a cross class skill for a Fighter. And you need endurance feat. Neither of these are great for a fighter. As a cleric you get two domains at level one. Pick the right domains and it is really powerful, it could be two feats.

Personally, the templar is more of a Fighter Cleric, so you'll be better at combat. The Cleric will be better with the spells, you get turn undead, the domains. Which is better for the charcater? Only you can decide.

i would go cleric- like Crotian stated, the domain abil are like feats if you choose the right ones.

personally, I like luck. that extra roll a day really gets you out of a pinch if you are ever hit with anythign and you crit missed. and if you take str domain, you get smite once a day...an the domain spells for str really imcreases your combat abil (bull str, endurance, cats grace...)

Plus, the extra bonuses on your will and fort saves is better than just the one for templar. Insta cure spells are always a bonus...

The Templar does get good will and Fort saves, plus mettle. THat's evasion for Fort and Will saves. And WEapon Specilization all at first level. However, as a fighter, you might already have that, and even if not it's easy for fighters to get.

But the spells, turn undead, curing, and domains of the cleric clearly make it supior. Plus no need to wast way to many skill points on Knowledge religion or a feat on Endurance. If you find you really like the spell power of the cleric you can advance to awsome power, but the templar is much more limited there.

I'm more inclined to Fighter/cleric, especially since you could go warpriest if you felt the need to be a TRULY fearsome fighter type. It also allows you to get Glory and/or Domination. Course I do think both are fine as regular domains.

You might want to look at the Divine Champion class from FR. You can get the rules on the class for free by finding that Living CIty guideline PDF.

Divine Champion is a short 5 level PrC that requires weapon focus in the diety's favored weapon, and some skills at relatively few ranks each. The class is similar to a fighter, but with extra divine gifts like a small bonus to saves against outsiders and rival clerics, a weak lay on hands, and a divine wrath ability.

Personally I always felt Divine champion would be better complimented by another Pr-class. Thus I'd probably go Fighter 2 levels/cleric 4/war priest 10/divine champion 4

But then that's just me.

The templar has no reason for being, except to fill out a couple of pages in a splatbook, and let people who don't like paladins to play paladins without thinking they're playing paladins. :)

Play a fighter/cleric. It's essentially the same thing. Save the PrC for a concept that really needs it.

Take it from me do the combination of Cleric/Fighter/templar. It works great its what I am playign currently and just hit level 12. Theres many different ways to play the combinations for this character.

On a side note I would also recomend the Luck Domain, good for those ufortunate rolls. maybe take war/strength or destruction as your other domain. Cleric levels and Templar levels stack for smite's. War domain since you need weapon focus in your deity's favored weapon, don't think you wanna waste to many feats. Also strength is good for a super charged hit.
