I've been heavily getting into the upcoming game "Trench Crusade" lately.
Basically, it's 1914 (WW1 era) and humans are fighting a war against demons that started in 1099 when the Templar Knights opened a gate to Hell in Jerusalem and has been going on for over 800 years.
It's a blend of medieval, dieselpunk, grimdark, and heavy religious undertones. There are factions like:
-New Antioch (Christian military)
-Trench Pilgrims (human zealots/fanatics)
-Sultanate of the Iron Wall (Muslim faction)
-Heretics (evil humans and demons)
-Black Grail (pestilence demons)
-Seven-headed Serpent (elite demons and magic)

The game has just finished a KS at ober 3mio dollar, and encourages kitbashing miniatures, so that's what I'm happily doing.

I agree that doing up the bases looks great on miniatures but I generally prefer transparent or black bases as I also use terrain and a neutral base works better on a range of surfaces.

If the mini will stand on its own (because it has a built on base - like many Reaper minis) I won't bother with a base at all! If it needs a base to stand, then I base it and the details/texture I add has a lot more to do with mood at the moment than with aesthetics.

Then again, I personally am about "table-ready minis." They only need to look as good as they need to be distinct and clear on the table during play. They are not meant to be display pieces (again, for me). It is for this reason that I really don't have a "grey tide" or a "pile of shame," 2024 will be the first time in 3 years I don't paint over 200 minis in the year (I keep a spreadsheet), and even so, it will still be in the neighborhood of 150.

"Table-ready" is my motto as well, and I also go at a rapid pace. For example, that Cthulhu Kickstarter delivered in September with around 150 miniatures, and I am just about finished it. I've been going at what I consider a fairly leisurely pace (haven't painted a single one this week).

There are a few miniatures where I put in the extra time, but I kind of know I'm not in the same league as guys like MGibster and Reelo, so there's only so much I can do. I'm much more of a "good enough" painter.

That is friggin' impressive.

Yeah, I will put in extra time on bigger minis because I actually have a decent shot of painting the details well (b/c they are bigger in scale) and because mess ups are easier to spot for the same reason. But I know I am never gonna be at the level of many others and that is okay. I keep occasionally pushing myself, even as I mostly make do. I only started painting minis as age 50, long after my vision had already started going. 🤓

Table ready is my motto as well as most of my models are intended for use in gaming. Actually all of my models are intended for use in gaming though I don't always use them. I have yet to use any of my dragons for example. There are times when I make a concerted effort to paint to a higher standard than simple table ready, but that's reserved for special miniatures that are either large, expensive, special for some reason, or a combination of all three.

I'm only just now starting to understand the importance of undercoats and blending. Don't know how far I can get with this, but it's a lot of fun. Frustrating sometimes though. Sometimes you try something new and it just doesn't work.

Much better thread to interact with than all the various threads making headlines in our hobby. Painting is such a relaxing part of the hobby. Nice paint job up thread, nicely done!
Yeah this is one of my favorite threads for sure. I love seeing what people are doing. For example- that marid shown earlier. Gorgeous! I painted mine like the monster manual. That one’s so much better! I just love seeing what people come up with.
