Quick question for the veterans. If I'm going to do any sort of basing, do I apply spray varnish on the mini before I do the base or after? Second, any recommendations on varnish from anyone? It seems like an important step if you expect the mini to be handled with any regularity. Thanks!

Not sure about basing before or after. Though, I got some varnish I like.

If using a brush I like this.

If using airbrush (preferred) I like that.

I do it after as a final adhesion for the flocking and other bits. I just use Rustoleum 2x Painter's Touch spray, either matte or gloss depending on the mini (thing that are supposed to be wet or slimy, I use the gloss for).

I just use a 3 to 2 ratio of water and PVA in a tiny spray bottle that originally had eyeglass cleaner in it.
But I don't really use that for sealing, just for between layers of sand or grit or other small bits where I want the adhesive to seep into for firmer drying.

Meant to say, those drybrushed minis look great to me.

That's one thing with the cheap brush set I bought. The standard brushes are doing pretty good but I question the quality (or lack thereof) of the included drybrushes. It's probably more to do with my just getting started with the technique and knowing when I've achieved what I'm aiming for in terms of coverage.

As an aside, while I like the detail on a resin mini (provided the supports are cleaned well enough), I do not like the fragility of most resin minis. I'm constantly bumping and breaking them, even with relatively gentle bumps. Oops! There goes a sword...

Also, as I've found out today trying to paint a half dozen minis, my hands aren't as steady as they used to be...
