Congrats. I'd love to get in one some 1E or 2E stuff, and I'm sure they exsist in my area, but time is always a factor.

And I vote Illusionist. I played one once (15th level) in a con game way back when, and I remember having a blast with the class. :)

The 1E Bard.
1st edition bard totally rock as you have to take levels in fighter and thief to get even one level in bard. You will be tough as nails and if you love wariror types, go for that. If you go for the monk, ask the DM if he will allow the alternate rules from the dragon magazine article entitled, 'he's got a lot to kick about.' Then that too is a great choice.

The thief is really cool because they level so quickly, nothing like a 5th level wizard with the same XP as a 9th level thief :) Plus, it is the only class you can get unlimited level in if you don't play a human.

For the money though, I would really say take a wizard. Sure they suck at first level, and well, actually the first 5 or 6 levels, but they eventually come into thier own and rule the game.

Side note, illusionists are a lot of fun, but if you lack an imagination, stick to a druid, cleric or wizard.

If you are playing TRUE 1E AD&D then the likelihood that you'll qualify for a Paladin or Ranger is pretty slim when you are throwing dice for stats.
Ah yes, the paladin is really hard to qualify for. Back when we played 1st edition we rolled stats in order, so when I finally rolled a 17 for CHR, I had to make that guy a Paladin because I knew I would never be able to again.

I've got that issue - in fact, in the 1e game I got to run for a grand total of 1 session before the group fell apart from scheduling woes, one of the players was playing a monk using that article. Man, that would've been a fun group if everyone could've gotten their schedules straight...

I think I'm going to go with a human magic-user. An illusionist would be crazy-ass fun, but it looks like the party is going to be small enough that I should probably play a more all-around useful mage. Sigh. The group's meeting at a bar tomorrow night to hash out characters and such, so I'll know for sure tomorrow. Really, it's been so long since I've played any D&D, let alone 1e, that I'll be happy to rock any class. And rock it I will! Oh, sweet 1e, I've missed you so much...

Congrats! Be sure to drop by Knights n Knaves and Dragonsfoot to discuss your AD&D adventures!

Also, are you, by chance, playing in Greyhawk? :D
I certainly will! Dragonsfoot has become one of my big online time eaters. I don't post there much, but I enjoy it immensely - since my edition focus has changed, I appreciate the numbers and rules there quite a bit. I'll regale the crowd there with my continuing adventures once the game is up and running - unless, of course, my character is killed by that bane of 1st level characters everywhere, the giant centipede!

The game IS actually set on Oerth, I believe, but not the Flanaess - it's another continent that the DM has created. I think the continent is supposed to have been the site of a prison colony, so I doubt the party's going to be rolling about in the lap of luxury!

Congrats!

Best of luck with your. . . well, whatever (s)he ends up being.

The 1e Bard was totally the rock, I agree. But um. . . 4 15s, a 12 and a 10, in specific places? Riiiiight. :D

I liked the Ranger too. But er, 2 14s and 2 13s, with the same conditional as above. Great. :p

The DM going with method I (i.e. same as 3e, minus rerolls) for ability score generation?

I love the 1st edition Ranger! Lest ye forget 1e Rangers got a mix of Druid AND Wizard spells. Nothing like Rangers throwing around Magic Missiles, Invisibility, Stinking Cloud and Web. :)
