Fireball is a anti-climatic spell ?

You want a climatic spell?

Disintigrate.
Finger of death.

-OR-

Implosion.

Fireball's got just enough "oomph" for a 3rd lvl spell.... and I wouldn't say that it being a slow burn now, instead of a big 'ole bang takes away any drama. Roiling balls of fire are to be well avoided by all. When you first get it (5th lvl), it's pretty nifty. Only natural that it plays second fiddle to higher-level spells.

'Sides, there's a certain amount of humor in the "slow burn" when the party mage toasts his companions with a maximized, empowered fireball. Just close your eyes and visualize.

I usually play in a rather big party with more than one wizard.
2 or 3 fireballs all cast simultaneously by invisible, flying wizards is very climactic.

I don't know about anti-climactic, but my 7th lvl party just recently managed to kill an adult 10 head cryohydra with a sturdy door, good walls, and a Staff of Fire.

For posterity: I didin't write the above. I let Ferris_Beuler use this machine last night when I went to bed. He forgot to re-log.

Yes, I do find fireball very anti-climactic. The enemy summons a horde of undead and the wizard just toasts them all into dust with one or two spells. Then he just casts polymorph other on the big baddy and the party is suddenly fighting a viscious tree sloth!

In Hackmaster you have at least one Fireball variant per level, from the small 1st level fireball to wonderful high level variants.

I love the "fire and forget" sidewinder fireball that follows the target :)
