Firefly RPG I want it!

I was toying with the idea of using Star Wars d20 for a Firefly game. I actually got out my Alternity stuff and seeing how that wold work.

I know you guys are going to burn me for a heretic, but I have to say it...

*gulp*

I think the GURPS 4E rules would be great for Firefly.

Nah, no cries of heresy from me. That's what I would probably use.

Traveller could do it, but it'd be fairly hard, especially with the lack of money/decent armor that most smugglers would have.

I'm not sure I understand this statement. Are you talking about personal armor, or ship's armor. Because as far as I can tell, the Serenity doesn't have much in the way of ship's armor. So Traveller would be perfect for that. And the characters in Firefly don't appear to be wearing any personal armor, so Traveller is perfect for that.

As for the lack of money, have you looked at T20? In the mustering out tables, the Rogue class has the best monetary benefits (crime DOES pay in T20 ;) ). Merchant has the second best mustering out tables. Those are the two classes you would probably use to create a smuggler (or at least those are the ones I would use). Plus both of those classes have opportunities to roll good cash bonuses during the prior history section.

My first T20 character, a Rogue, had so much money after mustering out (250,000+ credits), the Ref asked me why the character would be adventuring? He could retire and live off the interest. :)

But you are correct about the lethality of Traveller combat. You would have to impose some house rules to make it more cinematic and in keeping with the style of Firefly.

Don't forget people, Serenity (aka Firefly: the Movie) opens in theaters September 30th. There's already an office party/movie trip scheduled here at Alternate Realities Publications to celebrate. We were going to start a betting pool on what would be the first "stupid thing to come out of Jayne's mouth", but the options are too limitless for anyone to have a decent chance of winning.

Are those that have already seen it allowed to join the betting pool? :)

I've got a spec sheet, though I don't know where it came from, and I haven't been able to find it again. But according to the sheet, the Firefly class ship has a "5 laminate hull with three layers of void fluid reseal embed." Laminate can mean all kinds of things, and you could read that as the material the hull itself is made of, but it also suggests d20 Future's Polymeric Armor (d20F 133) to me. Furthermore, in the episode Serenity, we see that Zoe was wearing a completely concealable bulletproof vest during the battle with Patience on Whitefall. That seems to equate to the d20 Modern Undercover Vest (d20M 110). So, you know, there's that.

As an aside, there is a Serenity RPG (licensed from the film) coming out at GEN CON.

That's not so much an aside as it is something that's already been pointed out. :) Thanks for posting the link, though.

My buddy Clark ran Serenity demos at Origins while I ran Dragonlance demos, and he had a great time doing so. The con-goers who played in the demos really had a great time, and it captures the movie (and, by inference, the show) pretty darn well.

Cheers,
Cam

Oops, right you are! I did a quick scan of the thread and got all bleary-eyed from the Traveller talk before I saw the stuff about the RPG acutally coming out. Sorry for the waste of bandwidth (and the further waste while apologizing for the original waste :) ).

True, you can get some serious creds. And ships. And guns and things.

To my knowledge, there is no armor worn by Serenity's crew. I assume they would be the average, not the exception.

I mean, Traveller could run barely legal trader/smugglers that get into fights with ease. But it would be traveller style ones with guns that kill and characters that wear armor unless they want to die.

Traveller is a more Sci-fi oriented style than Firefly I think. Firefly draws more on a western tradition than a sci-fi one.

You might give a nice little bonus to AC, or change the lifeblood thing into standard vitality points/wound points like star wars. With the change out of lifeblood and into vp/wp it gets a bit more firefly I think.

Though I think whats-her-name probably went through the psionic tree :D.
