First Person or Third Person

I modify my comment according to the following posts: for me, it is entirely different whether the DM refers to NPCs at the third person or whether the players refer to their character at the third or first person.

As a DM I speak at the first person but refer to NPCs at the third person. PCs refer to their characters at the first person (see post above).

Both. 3rd person for piddly things, 1st person when stuff gets interesting. Id never go thru an encounter with an important NPC in 3rd person.

I personally, prefer people who speak in first person when describing action, but that's because I equate roleplaying to extemporaneous theatre with rules (flame away!). Constant narration in the third person shatters suspension of disbelief for me, forever reminding me that I'm playing a game which, in turn, often makes me wonder why I'm not playing HeroQuest or some other game that produces the same results with a lot less effort.

That is, for me, role playing games without... you know, playing a role, are kind of a waste of time.

I agree 100% :)

As a player:

In tabletop games - first person

In PbP games - third person

As a DM:

Switching between third person (most of the time) and first person (dialogue) regularly

There is no rhyme or reason behind when or where I'll express my character in first or third person. I haven't figured it out and it usually takes me by surprise and makes me pause for just a second when speaking in 3rd person pops out.

Most times, though, it's 1st person. When I'm practicing the Art of Seduction against an NPC (or, rarely, another PC), it's always 3rd person as doing that stuff in public and the center of attention makes me veeeery uncomfortable.

I probably do both, but since I haven't paid attention, I couldn't say for sure. Probably more first person than third person. Certainly, when playing, the DM asks 'what do you do' more than 'what does your character do?'

I write all of my character write-ups in first person. I think that helps me get into the mindset of the character even when I'm playing and not writing.

As a DM during combat, 3rd person. RPing mixes from third (establishing) to first (dialogue). And when I play, I almost always use first person.

Demiurge out.
