D&D 5E Fixing the Fighter: The Zouave

Wouldn't that in 5e be a case for "working together" for advantage or if it's a social encounter possibly changing the risk level and do changing the DC per DMG?
To me that lacks a natural sense of rising tension as failures and successes tally up... (how many efforts does it take to get the all or nothing advantage)

The 4e encouragement to allow skills to have equal time with the use of a ritual or bribe or whatever also solidly reinforces them.

D&D sucks at chase sequences and scenarios. I would kill to see good rules for it. Never liked any system proposed in d&d or pathfinder.
4e DMG2 highly recommended reading material. And this is skill challenges written up for 5e not sure how well as I havent seen it used.
but I’m also trying to figure out a cool way to do motorcycle combat
Cannot help with that one... D&D mounted combat sucks

So the fighter has been lacking since the 70s? But it's still a problem? o_O
spookie huh... in my opinion it wasnt fully fixed in 4e either they under did the fighter trained skills in 4e and didnt properly develop Martial Practices. (hey he was RAW kind of bad at those because those are dependent on trained skills too). Generally though there are those who will say MP can be basically improvised in a skill challenge (see DMG2 guidelines) and having more Healing Surges he had the resource to make the extra effort that allowed out of combat competence. Its a bit like being able to spend an HD to get an auto success when you really need it.

Which is one of he recommendations I had for giving the fighter skill benefits allow them to do heroic exertions, perhaps allow spending 3 hit points to over exert and gain a die worth of temporary expertise bonus.

LOL. If it's been an issue with you for the past 4 decades and there hasn't been a fix yet maybe the problem is staring you in the mirror.

Really I only have equally rude responses to you ... jack

Maybe I could have stated that better. But I accept that no game can ever be perfect, that at a certain point there's no value to complaining about something that simply isn't broken for most people. I'd love to be able to fly to work in my car every morning, I accept that's not going to happen so I don't go around complaining that cars are broken because they don't fly.

If no version of D&D has fixed it for you maybe it's because it can't be fixed any more than my car can fly.

Group stealth checks work great for this kind of thing. There is a nice section on group skill checks somewhere can’t remember where that I found worked great.
I sometimes use group skill rolls, but I think this particular hypothetical encounter is far more interesting without. Orcs only have a passive perception of 10 so it would be trivial to sneak past them with a group roll.
