Flanking

Let's not forget the case of a Large (Long) creature):

Code:
[color=white]
-------
|.....+##
|...[color=#cccccc]o[/color].| [color=#cccccc]o[/color] : an orc or goblinoid (goblin)
|.[color=red]h[/color][color=violet]w[/color]..| [color=red]h[/color] : a humanoid (dwarf)
|.[color=lime]@[/color][color=violet]~[/color]..| [color=lime]@[/color] : A human or elf (elf)
|..[color=#bb4040]G[/color]..| [color=#bb4040]G[/color] : A gnome
|.....| [color=violet]w~[/color] : A worm, with tail (purple worm)
-------
[/color]

The goblin and the elf flank the purple worm. The dwarf and the gnome do not.

If the gnome takes a 5' step west, he flanks with the goblin. If he takes a 5' step east, he flanks with the dwarf. If he takes a 5' step northeast, he flanks with both the dwarf and the elf.

Also with the new facing if 3.5 (all facing are in squares) larger face creature can be flanked in more than the normal ways.
See below.

All X's = one big mob

In this exg.

1 and 5 flank
1 and 7 flank
2 and 5 flank
2 and 7 flank
3 and 6 flank
3 and 7 flank
4 and 6 flank

Has that been Revision Spotlighted somewhere?

By the Song and Silence rules, I only get:

2 and 7 flank
3 and 7 flank
4 and 6 flank

The lines between 1-5, 1-7, 2-5, 3-6 all pass through adjacent sides, not opposite sides...

Usually very bad idea. The rules were changed because the old ones didn't work, and the rules were made as they are so they fit together.

And it gets worse if people invent stupid rules: I played in a campaign where a crit was an additional attack. As long as you kept rolling 20's, you could crit a crit (for 3x damage) or even more. The sillly thing about that was every extra roll meant another attack. That became really weird with stuff like crossbows (which must be reloaded) or thrown weapons (if you only have one dagger to throw, you cannot throw 2 at the enemy).

Yeah, but if you read his post carefully, it sounds like the "2e rules" they're using are, in fact, the 3e rules :)

I know.

But it does happen, and when it happens, it's often bad news.

After I read that sentence, I involuntarily switched into Rant Mode... ;)
