Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone discussion thread

First Post
On Tuesday, September 14, Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone will be released for the Playstation 2. It is also being made for the PC and XBox, but those versions won't be out until November.

I created this thread in advance for people to discuss the game. Personally, I'm really excited for it. The Two Towers console game was very fun and addictive, and had a very cinematic feel to it. Demon Stone is being made by the same company as the Two Towers, and looks like it will improve upon TTT's gameplay in nearly every way.

Demon Stone is a third-person action game set in the Forgotten Realms. The game features a storyline written by R.A. Salvatore and voice acting by actors such as Patrick Stewart and Michael Clarke Duncan. The game is set in the Bloodstone Lands region of the Forgotten Realms, and you control three different characters: Rennek (a human fighter), Illius (a human sorcerer), and Zhai (a half-drow/half-wood elf rogue). The game allows you to switch between the different characters with the push of a button, and over time your characters will learn new attacks as well as gaining new weapons, armor, and other special equipment.

The game may not be hitting shelves for two more days, but here are some articles to tide you over until then:

Im looking forward too and Im seriously thinking of getting this game first before Fable (also released on the 14th). I just hope the game isnt as difficult as the LOTR hack and slashers were. Move to checkpoint die..move to checkpoint die

Interestingly, it seems RA Salvatore has incorporated some of the characters and stuff from the recent Hunters Blade Trilogy inot the backstories of the games characters. And I guess the fighter Rannek will make an appearance in vol 3 of the Trilogy.

The movies at Gametrailers.com look pretty cool. Alas, I've already reserved the money for WH40K: Dawn of War and The World of Warcraft....

I actually plan on buying this game. This will be the first PS2 game I will own, and the first video game I'll be playing since FFVIII. Well, besides the Midway classics and the semi-weekly four way Smackdown session at my friends.
I can't say why I'm drawn to this game. It's not because it's written by R.A Salvatore; I've only read "the Crystal Shard" and that was over a decade ago. It's not because on Michael Clark Duncan and Picard, because really, who cares about that so much. Maybe it's because I haven't played DnD in a long while, and I'm jonesing for it and this could be as close as I get in a long while.
Someone posted that it takes place in the bloodstone lands. Are you sure about that? I saw a preview and Khelben "Blackstaff" Arunsun makes a guest appearance. And isn't the Hunters Blades taking place in the Sword Coast North and the Silver Marches? (Ok, I was kinda lying about only reading "the Crystal Shard". I read the first chapter in the first Hunters blade novel before deciding that I'd rather consume Drizzt's rotting feces)

Yes. I've read multiple previews for Demon Stone, and most of them have mentioned that the game takes place in the Bloodstone Lands of Damara and Vaasa. This will be a nice change of scenery, as the last few FR games (Baldur's Gate series, Icewind Dale series, Neverwinter Nights) have all taken place along the Sword Coast.

I will hold off until the PC version but console game normally hack & slash and limited characters, play one of four. What I will be interested in see are mods!

That makes it even sweeter. I love the Bloodstone Lands . I always wanted to play those modules for 2nd edition, the ones with Orcus where the last adventure was for character levels 18-100; or so it said on the cover. I actually take back everything bad I said about R.A. Salvatore; because I loved the Bloodstone Lands supplement he wrote. I hope TS...er..WOTC (how long has it been?) Does some good with that area. Maybe this will be a spring board?

I actually got to play this game at the ExCel Game Show in London a couple of weeks back. AMAZING game. It looks great, the story rocks, and I was hard pressed to do anything BUT play Demon Stone for the entire time I was there...very tough at some points, but man is it fun.

You actually adventure with three characters and switch between controlling them in combat. At first it was very confusing to get a hang of, but it gets to be more and more fun as you get used to it. Sadly, I can't give a much better review beyond "Woah!".

Well, the release date is here! Now here's the press release...

ATARI’S FORGOTTEN REALMS: DEMON STONE HITS RETAIL STORES

Popular Dungeons & Dragons World Explodes Onto PlayStation®2;
Xbox and PC Versions to Ship in November

LOS ANGELES – Sept. 14, 2004 – Atari, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATAR) under license from Hasbro, Inc., today announced that the highly anticipated Forgotten Realms®: Demon Stone™, an action game set in the popular Dungeons & Dragons® world created by Wizards of the Coast, is now available at retail outlets nationwide. Demon Stone for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system is retailing for an estimated price of $49.95 and is rated “T” for Teen. Demon Stone is expected to become available for the Xbox® videogame system from Microsoft and the personal computer in November.

Designed by Stormfront Studios, developers of The Lord of the Rings®: The Two Towers™, Demon Stone features a storyline developed by New York Times best-selling author R.A. Salvatore, and includes the extraordinary talents of actors Patrick Stewart and Michael Clarke Duncan, who provided their voices to two prominent roles in the video game. These combined talents bring Demon Stone to life in a classic story of good versus evil, with a world on the brink of destruction and a party of heroes seeking redemption.

“Demon Stone’s intense, action-oriented and cinematic gameplay represents the transition of a brand that has traditionally been associated with niche gameplay to one that is more accessible to a mainstream consumer audience,” said John Hight, executive producer, Atari’s Los Angeles studio. “Demon Stone also demonstrates Stormfront Studios’ perfection of the immersive, interactive experience by combining all of the important elements into a cohesive presentation, including: the prodigious vocal talents of Patrick Stewart and Michael Clarke Duncan; a powerful story by R.A. Salvatore and a moving orchestral score.”

In Demon Stone, the player directs a party of three characters – Fighter, Sorcerer and Rogue. Each of the characters excels at a certain type of gameplay. The Fighter thrives in melee combat, the Sorcerer is excellent at ranged and magical combat and the Rogue excels at jumping, sneaking and disarming traps. The player controls one party member at a time -- switching between them on the fly -- while the other party members are controlled by the engine’s sophisticated artificial intelligence.

Demon Stone utilizes an extensive fighting system which is both easy to learn and visually stunning. Characters perform amazing attacks and feats at the simple touch of a button, but the system has sophisticated features for advanced players who want to tailor their attacks to maximize their damage in specific situations. Unique special attacks, combinations, linked combos, super attacks and even group super attacks allow advanced players to excel against their most fearsome foes.

Demon Stone’s intense, cinematic action is set entirely within the visually stunning Forgotten Realms fantasy world. Familiar characters, such as the famous drow Drizzt Do’Urden and the legendary mage Khelban “Blackstaff” Arunsun (played by Patrick Stewart); the formidable Slaad Lord, Ygorl (played by Michael Clarke Duncan); terrifying monsters, including Dragons, Orcs, Slaadi, Yuan-Ti and Trolls; as well as geographical locations straight from the popular D&D campaign setting will make appearances and serve as backdrops throughout the game.

Demon Stone is now available for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system for an estimated retail price of $49.95 and is rated “T” for Teen. Additional information about Demon Stone can be found online at www.atari.com/demonstone.
