[FR]Player wants to play a Bard/Ninja :), what do you think?

Stormrunner said:
For a ninja, perfect success means no-one even suspected a ninja was present, NOT a room full of dead bodies. As Jack of Shadows pointed out, this character is essentially James Bond, or Reilly (Ace of Spies).

Sam Fisher, Splinter Cell ;)

First.

This COULD be cheesy. From a Can Cheesy.

A Chaotic Good Celstial Ninja Bard of Sharess (Goddes of sensual delight). Seduce em' (bard), sex em' (Sharess), kill em' (ninja). Sounds like a Showtime Movie to me. Of course, I know my players, which is why I'd never allow it (as described).

I don't know this guy, so maybe he's serious.

The Assassins could be the branch of the Harpers that broke off. They are more 'gritty' (IE, WotC was looking to drop the goody-goody moniker from the FR). I think they are mentioned in Thronhold by Elaine Cunnigham. They fit the CG aAssassin type very well.

A different Idea he might never have thought of.

He's from Kara-Tur. He's descended from the Celestial Beuacracy. He's Bardic powers are from the Kabuki style of perform (you'll have to tweek the bard here). The Ninja organization is none other than good old dad's division of the CB.

I think it'd work a lot better than his current plan, plus give your game a cool Manga feel (if you'd like that).

Well here is his follow up background, he put a lot of effort into this:

*Being my report on the suspicions of one Malkaviel Celestine:*

My first impression of Malkaviel came from a distance. His smooth vocal delivery of “3 Princes and a Maiden” were fascinating. A small crowd of children and adults (the majority of whom were lovely ladies) had gathered to hear his recitation at the base of the impromptu stage he had made out of the town square's fountain.

Little is known about the early life of Malkaviel Celestine. By his mannerisms it is difficult to tell if he is a noble or commoner. For example, his dialect and language are overtly proper and personifyaristocracy, but his humble demeanor suggest that of the common working
class. When speaking with Malkaviel you notice that the word “I” seem to be completely absent from his vocabulary. He only speaks of himself in third person, never using his given name (it assumed Malkaviel is his given name but not known) and surname together. But interspersing both with answering my interview questions.

I have done a bit of minor research into Malkvaiel's past and have come up mostly empty. I was able to determine a line of Aasimar family with the Celestine surname, but no record exists of one named Malkaviel (admittedly my influence does not cross the waters to other lands). It seems his past is as much of a mystery as the man himself but that is not uncommon for travling performers such as he.

I was able to interview a number of townsfolk and a couple of magistrates from some of the outlying towns and they all agreed that despite his embelishments with minor enchantments and magics, he is not more than a troubador who scrapes by using his mesmerizing voice to
capture the generosity of those who listen. On gentleman said, “There was rumor he spent a long evening with a certain councilman's virgin daughter. After a private meeting, the performer and the councilman were seen having a nip of tea and crumpets and laughing jovially. Nothing more was ever said of it.

Following my interview with Malkaviel (a complete transcript will be provided of course) I must determine that he should not be considered a suspect. Mendrigo's murder was far more secretive and nimble. The was a sign of forced entry were the scuff marks around the top floor window. Malkaviel had free reign to come and go as he pleased, and it has been
confirmed that he was bedding not one but three different women on that night! This is likely the work of a skilled assassin, probably hired by one of Mendrigo's many enemies (lord knows he made plenty both politically and economically). Besides, it is now a public secret that Malkaviel was a distant cousin who was travelling the world after he lost his wife in childbirth. He stands to gain no inheritance at all.

I should think that Malkaviel is free to leave at will. He has assured that should any more questions arise, he will gladly return to answer them.

Deputy Inspector Rondiff

*Malkaviel's account of his past (it is not written, nor does anyone else know besides the parties involved in his training).*

Malkaviel was born into an aristocratic family of Aasimar with the given name Evan Celestine. His father, Mendrigo Celestine was a judge for one of the upper courts. His early teen years were that of a typical noble family. Evan always had a love for song and women, much to the chagrin of his prim and proper mother Deirdre.

In his late teens Evan uncovered something that changed his life forever. His father was a corrupt judge, who often made what seemed like justified fair rulings in favor of expanding the family wealth. There was it seems a network of corrupt politcos who could do no harm.
Witnessess were tampered with by magical means, and some just outright disappeared. All the while, Evan's father was on the take. After years of a lawful upbringing, Evan's world came crashing down around him.

Evan could no longer look his father in the eye. He wept himself to sleep at night until he had an epiphany.

One summer morning, Evan took his younger brother to the river for a swim. They swam down to the local bluffs where they did their acrobatic flips and dives into the rushing water below. Evan then made his final leap and silently said goodbye to his aristocratic life forever. Evan dove off the bluff and never came back up .. at least that his younger brother could see. Evan had purchased some magical reed from one of the local alchemists. This reed allowed evan to breath normally while underwater.

Evan swam and swam floating with the current for miles upon miles downstream, each second bearing down further from his former life. Evan then took up a new life. One of that of a travelling performer named Thunal, using his untrained but charismatic voice to buy his meals and lodging as he travelled.

Each day Thunal moved farther away from his homeland and one day boarded a ship whose captain provided a handsome payment for a traveling musician to entertain his ship's crew and passengers.

Thunal landed himself in the Eastern Lands which were filled with strange folk that Thunal had ne'er imagined. He found himself a bit out of trade as he could not speak the language here (a seldom few spoke common) but he was able to scrape away a living playing the piano at a skilled but unexemplary level.

Then his eyes met with Kashanna. A local bardess who immediately found herself entranced by his eyes of solid gold. For the next year Kashanna taught him the language and customs of the eastern lands. At 21 years of age, Kashanna introduced Thunal to a new life. A life of unspoken justive. Thunal was introduced to Meeshai, who would be his tutor and
mentor for the next seven years in his training as an assassin of those who pervert and corrupt justice.

Thulan was given his task at the start of his seventh year. He must bring down the man who perverted justice and scarred his childhood – his father. The task was simple. It was completed without a hitch. Even the suspicions of the intvestigators were put at ease. Though Thulan had only recently waltzed into town, he waltzed out just as easily, still an
innocent man.

Upon his christening into the Ninja clan of Husay Mui Nonkonor – He was gifted a new name – Malkaviel. He was also gifted with the sword that would guide him through his early years of infiltrating the world's governments and councils meting out justice where the corrupt systems failed.

Hey, that works for me! I love funky concepts.

My only concern would be if the player is VERY new. If this is his/her very first character, you might have a munchkin-in-waiting on your hands.
If he's picked bard, he isn't a very good munchkin. ;)

I like it. Personally though, I'd keep the player in question well away from the movie Ghost Dog, just so the ninja/bard doesn't start rapping.

Nah. Bard/Ninjas wail on their sweet guitars after they flip out and kill people.

I like that background more, I will run something like that by him to see what he thinks.

Hey I'm feeling unappreciated here. ;)

Well, he said he's playing in the FR, specifically in Silverymoon. I'd just call his "CG good assassins" a faction of the Harpers who believe the best way to deal with evil is to surgically remove it. I see great potential for character and plot development.

And with people arguing about the low power in a gestalt game: I think he makes a great infiltrator/assasin: Think geisha

By the way, I think you can put to rest your feelings that he was a potential munchkin. He seems to have put a lot of effort into his character, and the backstory was quiet entertaining to read (specially the police report).
