[FR]Player wants to play a Bard/Ninja :), what do you think?

Just wanted to jump in.....

I'm reading a lot of responses stating..."This seems ok." and "Cool character, wish I'd played that." This is fine, the math works ,I get that.

But something in the back of my head is making me think that dagger posted this thread to figure out where the heck a character like this fits in HIS game. He's not a computer, and has to work hard to cater to a few players wants and needs.

Maybe I'm off base here. But I have problems like this too, I call it the "Captain Kirk Syndrome"

GM: OK, guys. Let's play D&D
Player 1: I'd like a wizard!
Player 2: I'm a dwarf!
Player 3: I wanna be Captain Kirk!!
All others look at Player 3
DM: But....we're playing D&D.
Player 3: I don't care, I wanna be Captain Kirk.
DM: Is there anything else that you can think of that you'd have fun playing?
Player 3: Not really.

Now, most DM's don't have the courage to ask the last question at all, they just say "Ooooook." and go with it. BUT, dagger posted with pause.

I kind of fault "Mondo" worlds like FR, the ones that try to incorporate every aspect of Eastern/Western/Other fantasy. Or maybe the player's just bent on "Splinter Cel" style assassinations (in which case he's got solo issues, common with computer game converts, but another rant entirely)

So am I going anywhere close to where you are, dagger? These are similar character choice issues to mine. Hope you don't mind me sharing.

Well, he said he's playing in the FR, specifically in Silverymoon. I'd just call his "CG good assassins" a faction of the Harpers who believe the best way to deal with evil is to surgically remove it. I see great potential for character and plot development.

And with people arguing about the low power in a gestalt game: I think he makes a great infiltrator/assasin: Think geisha :)

I must admit that this character concept really came out of nowhere and hit me between the eyes. I shouldn't be that surprised though, the same player ran a CN Shadowdancer in the last campaign (I was player in that game). This will officially be his 2nd character ever in a pen and paper rpg game.

When he first told me his character concept, I sent an email asking him to explain how his character views the world. That’s when he sent me the background information that I posted at the start of this thread.

I am going to have to find a way to work this type of character in with the rest of the group. The rest of the group is made up of the typical stuff:

LG Dwarf Paladin/Cleric
LG Monk/Cleric

and stuff along that line....

Ouch. ;)

Still, it depends on how good are your players at handling character conflict (and not carrying it over to player conflict).

If you think they're up to the task, you have on your hands a cool setup for "End justifies the means" discussions.

:uhoh:

The monk/cleric might not be a problem (I can see a LG character being a sneaky type as well), but that paladin, and a dwarf no less, is liable to really get in the way of good old fashioned ends justifying the means. :)

I don't suppose he'd be interested in Shadowbane Inquisitor some time down the line?

Overall, it could make for some interesting rp opportunities or be totally derailed by characters' ethical disagreements.

I hope it works out for you.

Personally,

The character is a spy. One of the perceptional problems with D&D is that everyone seems to wear a big label with their classes written on it. I suggest we stop looking at the names of the classes and look at the abilities involved. The character is a highly charismatic and charming individual who is very talented at sneaking around in the dark. He's a medieval James Bond. Fantasy liturature is full of these guys and they're usually the heroes.

I've always had a problem where the Paladin feals it is more good to assualt the BBEG's fortress, killing off all the hired help rather than sneak into the fortress and smite the BBEG. I mean most of the guards are usually just dumb shmoes trying to make a living. Sure they work for a not so nice guy but you think they're not going to reconsider their line of work when, despite the small army they form, the boss gets off'd anyway? Isn't redeeming souls what Good is all about?

My two cents/ mini rant.

This reminds me of the Austin Powers scene, with the henchmens family. :D

Yea I think the class name 'ninja', really put me off at first.

If you wanted to change the class name from Ninja to one more in line with a campaign like mine, what would you change the name too?

Or, better yet, read the extensive Destroyer novel series on which the movie was based. :)

Sadly, they seem to be mail-order only these day, and the last few I read had dropped off in quality (new author, IIRC), but the older ones were classics.

There was a novel series? Where might I find out more about this?
