Free RPG Day is fast approaching, is your FLGS participating?

ICE did not have anything appropriate to contribute at the time that call was sent out to publishers about the Free RPG Day.

However, we did release something yesterday that is somewhat appropriate and so are making a limited offer to aid in the spirit of the day. You can read about it over in this thread -- http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=199703

Well, it really sucks that I have 4 game stores within a 30 mile radius and not one of them is participating. The nearest participating store is about two hours away. I had to balance the cost of gas and mileage on my car vs. what I'll have to play for this on eBay. Meh.

In any case, I'm glad others are in luck, and I hope you have a great time!

My FLGS isn't doing anything, but they did apologize -- they wanted to do it, but couldn't, since they were in Canada (and aren't making enough to offer free stuff on their own).

So, Green Ronin for me. :)

Any other companies offering anything online?

I got back after picking up DCC 50.5 and the Piazo module and Changeling the Lost demo. These are some high quality free stuff and they had a lot more that I was not all that interested in!! I was impressed.

I don't HAVE a FLGS near where I live. The closest one I know of is 40-45 miles away and does not carry a wide variety of stuff.

Yes - the Wotc DnD stuff is there, and that is good as far as that goes (although the B&N has the same stuff), but there's not a whole lotta variety systems wise. Saw some warhammer stuff when I was last in there.... Maybe there have new things now?

Anyway ... it is not worth a 75-90 minute drive IMO, gas prices being what they are and all. :\

Well, I just got back from my FLGS (or closest thing to one - The Fantasy Shop in Kirkwood). I was kinda underwhelmed. The store didn't even have a sign on the window. The clerk didn't mention it (he was chatting with a friend), just a table up front with the freebies (not even a sign on it). There were actually a couple of kids in the store buying RPGs, but they seemed to have missed out. (I was tempted to tell them, but IMHO, 35 year old men shouldn't be talking to 12 year old kids, except to yell them for some reason or another).

Some of the stuff available is really slick - the Goodman Games stuff (they didn't have any Xcrawl stuff) and Paizo. Basically just smaller regular products.

Some was sort of middle of the road, like pamphlets (Troll Lord and Flying Buffalo, and a few others whose name I didn't catch. I think the publisher of the Sov. Stone stuff had one for their own rules/setting, but didn't look intesting enough to take), . Others looks like stuff the companies had printed out themselves.

Not being greedy, I just picked up the DCC (only 3 left) and the WFF (about 5 left) from Goodman, the one from Paizo (last one left), the Tunnels and Troll pamphlet and the C&C pamphlet (lots left).

One interesting thing, the Paizo module doesn't use the d20 system logo, it has a "3.5 OGL" logo on it.

Anyway, I'm apreciative of the free stuff, but at the same time, I still wonder if this did any good. It got me into the store, but I didn't buy anything, basically for the same reason I rarely buy stuff there. Lack of selection and high prices. I promised myself I would buy something, but the only thing I could find that I wanted was a DCC, but factoring in tax, it's basically twice what I would pay for it on the internet. That's just too much.

Strangely, here in the Detroit area, none of the stores that stock a lot of roleplaying games participated, but RIW Hobbies, which barely stocks roleplaying games did participate. So I finally went to RIW Hobbies, a store I'd never had a good reason to visit before now.

They underwhelmed me. Apparently they didn't see Free RPG day as any sort of opportunity to encourage new customers. I bought a bottle of Zap-A-Gap and Gale Force Nine "Wall of Fire," picked up the free Dungeon Crawl Classic, and that was it. They didn't even have a sign in the window. (They were actually hanging signs up for a Magic tournament while I was there!) The 2 employees spent most of their time discussing some dude's tournament rankings.

Contrast them with my friendly local comic books store during Free Comic Book Day: They had local comic creators set up with tables, they were giving extra comics for joining the store mailing list, and even got the record store upstairs to give away stuff. That's a store that gets new customers from Free Comic Day. (In fact, they got me because of Free Comic Book Day last year.) I had to park a mall down the block because the comic book store's lot was full!

So, "hooray!" for Free RPG Day, "meh" for my stereotypically-mediocre FLGS.

Well, I had a blast! Got the freebie from Paizo and ran it today! I'll have to get permission to do a full written article on it because it was just so much fun! Thanks, Paizo, Games Plus, and my players for a great Free RPG Day! :)
