Friendly Fire

Hello all.

Any chance someone could explain to me the DnD 4ed rules on "friendly fire"? Is it assumed that the other players get out of the way of the mages Cone of Cold, or do they have the same chance of getting hit as the monsters? Does the type of damage matter? It seems to me that a fireball would hit the other PC's but something that does radiant damage would not.

When it says the target is "all creatures in X," it means "all creatures in X." It does not care about anything else. Not damage type, not affiliation, nothing.

If it says "all enemies in X," then it avoids friendlies.

There is no longer friendly fire for Ranged Attacks. Arrows and the like take no penalty for your friends being nearby, your friends don't even provide cover (enemies still do though).

For area attacks, it depends on the power.

Some powers say "All creatures in...". This is common for wizard's spells. In this case, anyone in the area, friend or foe, could take a hit.

Some powers say "All enemies in...". This is common for cleric spells. In this case your allies are completely unharmed by the attack, it only attacks enemies.

You have to roll to hit, there are no rules governing reducing your to hit roll / damage roll and the DMG has the "bag of rats" rule that tells the DM to overrule anything that even smells cheesy or unintended.

There is a feat that allows Wizards to take a penalty to hitting friendlies and do less damage when they do.

Thought there was a feat or a PP feature that allowed someone to make "holes" in AE powers. So if an ally was in the middle of an area effect spell, the feat would allow their squre to be ommitted from the attack.

There might be. I know there's a War Wizard PP and a War Wizardry feat. I think what I was referring to is the feat. Can't recall what the PP does.
