Friggen Laser Beams

Searing Light

A 3rd edition cleric spell (previous editions too?)

In any case firing beams of holy light seems clericy to me.

Yes, but now its an at will power. Not a 3rd level spell. Sure combat's supposed to be shorter but the cleric's going to be able to do that maybe dozen's of times a day.

Even John McClane's got to reload his 9mm pistol once in a while....

There were 0 level NPCs in older editions for noncasters, specialty priests in 2e, experts in 3e, and Unearthed Arcana variant clerics and other classes in 3.5 that could handle different archtypes than straight clerics for priests in older editions.

4e does not change whether priests must be clerics or not.

But unlike previous editions, we can now have a non-cleric casting Raise Dead, Cure Disease, Commune, or other non-combat spells by using Rituals in the core books - spells that are important for community (or cult) leaders, from harvest festival rituals that can actually improve crops to dark sacrifices to harvest souls.

Basically spells that are given to Divine Casters previously because they are "religious leaders" are now rituals that anyone can use and act as the religious leader, with power to back it up. Sure, in previous editions you can have a zero level NPC be the religious leader...but how does that make sense in a world where the lowliest acolyte (cleric 1) can call upon his god's powers...and be answered?

...but I have no problem with thinking that "light/radiance" and "darkness/death" are just two more elemental properties that are no different than fire or cold.
And you're spot on: From the DDXP spreads:
Prismatic Burst is a Wizard Attack 13 and deals 3d6 + Int radiant damage and blinds people.

And getting hit by a excellent prismatic spray, even the junior version, is never good! ;)

Cheers, LT.

Wow, let's not sound TOO dickish, shall we?

Truth hurts, huh?

I think it's lame that all clerics use "radiant" energy, and this is especially odd following their decision to very specifically allow evil paladins. So paladins can be evil, but clerics can't...?

Radiant has more than one meaning, and in this case, it's the "Emitting heat or bright light" one, not the "Bright with joy, hope, etc" one.

Just because one meaning of a word is applied, it doesn't mean that every other meaning of the word will apply as well.

Oddly enough, clerics with 'frikken laser beams' is one of the things I saw as encouraging.

I WANT to be able to play a cleric who doesn't wear armor, hangs back, and calls upon divine energies to turn someone into a shrub, blast another apart with holy power, and then heal is comrades.
