Some musicians experiment and succeed: exhibit #1 David Bowie. See also Rush. Others find their thing and stick with it, somehow not becoming stale. Weird Al and AC/DC are classic examples of this.

There’s merit in both, IMHO, and it’s not rigid. I’d say Anthrax is mostly like the latter bands, but they’ve tried some new stuff along the way, too, like:

For example, I look at Jack White, Ben Harper and Dan Auerbach as being tapped into similar musical sources. But White experiments a LOT more than the other two. When he’s got something, I don’t think the others can touch him. But when he’s off, he’s WAY off. So while there are works in Jack White’s discography I don’t think Auerbach or Harper could touch, I think their overall body of work is more consistently good.
