Some people seem to forget that Second Wind not only allows the expenditure of a healing surge, but also gives +2 on all defences until EONT. I think it's entirely unfair to suddenly give the monster access to that power if it wasn't already on its stat block.
Not really legal, but so awesome, I'd have given the player a Moment of Greatness in addition to allowing it.
The players tried, but i'd already gotten it this chapter for climbing the outside of the library, successfully stealthing through a 2nd floor window (in the stairwell) wearing full plate armor, and during the fight, bull rushing what's his name (Nethair?) over the 2nd floor balcony 20 ft up (he rolled a 6 on his save to be pushed over) for 18 dmg (2d10) for the rest of the party to curb stomp and drop a book case on him.
... Your table seems a heck of a lot more fun than ours. Don't get me wrong, we have fun, but I've been trying to encourage bold tactics like this.
Sure, but First Aid only triggers the monster's extant Second Wind. So you are essentially arguing that all monsters have access to Second Wind, even though it doesn't appear in their stat block. I see that as just wrong. The rules are clear on that. The First Aid action of a heal skill check prohibits the +2 bonus to defenses, only the healing occurs.
