D&D (2024) gaining the same proficiency

I saw a cool new Video from Mike Shay yesterday where he created a 5.2 Characte. What irritaded me a bit that he got the same tools proficiency from the Class and Background (also a Skill, but he simply changed the one from the class) and got nothing for it.

The 2014 Version gave you another Proficiency if that happens, but this might have changed? For those who already have the book .. is there no rule for this or had Mike just overlooked it?

I watched enough to see he was taking the hermit background which granted +1 WIS and battle medic which says you can do cool things with medic kit. I would be cool to pick up training in that and not double herbalism.

I do not know enough to see if just dropping something is another form of buffing/minmaxing, or if not a big deal. I could see something with having double proficiency granting something, but doubt it is in it.

If someone thinks not getting a second tool proficiency is that much of a problem because of redundancy, this is a perfect time to speak with their Dungeon Master and work something out. Like using any customizing background rules in the DMG where you can just take the exact same stuff from the background in the PHB except for the tool proficiency and swap in something else.

The rule in 2014 was that if you got 2 of the same, you could pick another. I assume it's still in the rules somewhere.

I can't imagine why they would remove it. Especially when a lot of the changes where to make skills and tool more useful.

Also, any min-maxer would just assume custom backgrounds anyways.

I could see them removing it if they wanted to get rid of the automatic expectations of players by forcing them to instead have to talk with their DMs about it first. Subtle difference and one that end ups with no different result (in both cases the player gets a different skill/proficiency rather than being stuck with the same one twice)... but in 5E14 the book gave the player the power to make that choice without any input from the DM... so perhaps 5E24 has given a bit of the power back to the DM by having it be a collaboration?

For all we know, you are absolutely correct and it is indeed still somewhere in the new PHB... but my supposition was merely an attempt to explain why it could have been changed (not that it definitely was.)
