D&D (2024) 2024 edition questions

The classes were buffed, we do not have the new monsters yet, so not sure what your friend is complaining about there... the 2014 higher CR monsters were punching below their weight class though, so maybe that is what he is referring to

From the monsters we can see it looks like they are going to be buffed quite a bit too.

Yeah, everything got a bit of a power boost.

But the monsters are also getting boosts in 2024 and should be more dynamic.

There are a few points DM discretion should be used. Being able to buy and craft any item from the DMG is broken so I wouldn't allow that like I didn't in 2014. That is DM purview anyway.

I would say the only thing with the Cleric that jumps out at me which might be overpowered is casting Hallow as an Action at level 10 with Divine Intervention. This seems entirely intentional as Hallow is a level 5 spell and it works on level 5 spells. 10th level is starting to get high but it does seem a bit much. You can choose to have all creatures of a type be frightened or have vulnerability to whatever damage type your party has chosen to specialize in to take advantage of the ability.

For my games I'm going to allow only 1 Hallow to be active per caster too.

A rough draft of the ancient green dragon has been posted and it is far stronger than it used to be. It is very deadly.

Would like to see more first before forming a full opinion. For now it looks like the higher CR ones will be, the lower not so much, but then they were not too weak in 2014 either

Likely. If it isn't out yet... Dragons do seem a bit underwhelming. No spellcasting baked in, fewer attacks, etc.

I was trying to figure out today how to add a few levels of Sorceror to a dragon to beef it up a bit. For us AD&D veterans, they seem nekkid without it! I've just played low levels so far, so I don't know how a dragon actually plays in this edition. Could be fine, for all I know, and it's just nostalgia causing the grumbling.

The beefed up classes vs the lower powered 5e monsters kinda set him off, I guess. He's preparing to DM for a kid who shows all the hallmarks of a munchkin- he actually told him "You can't kill MY character!!" I cringed when I heard that... kid- you have no idea what you just did...

Sounds like a toxic dynamic.

At the end of the day I don't imagine anyone having fun.

2024 dragons will have powerful spellcasting.

I'm torn as to whether or not I want to participate in that particular adventure.

On the one hand, as described to me, it sounds like a tough but epic mini campaign. You just need" A) remember, you CAN avoid encounters, lol. and B) a good cleric! Also, the look of dismay on that player's face when he realizes how foolish it was to say that will be priceless. He'll definitely learn to be more careful.

On the other hand, I don't enjoy playing with those types, and especially don't enjoy being thrown under the bus as collateral damage, because someone else threw down the gauntlet... I may have to "work" until that one is over, lol.

We all started as munchkins back in the day, and the monty haul style loot didn't help. We got over it, so will this kid. His mother is a pretty good player, so...

The Twilight Cleric is notoriously powerful (some say the most powerful subclass of any class). Maybe your DM thinks that combining it with the 2024 rules will somehow break the game. I personally think it is fine, but who knows?
We're both pretty new to 5e, and haven't played it much yet. Life happened... He doesn't even have Tasha's. I think it's just a bit of crusty old coot of a 1/2e DM throwing a fit over 3 editions worth of accumulated changes. (He's my best friend since high school- I can say that, lol) And the modern outlook on how things should be done/ balanced, etc.

I did create a party of test characters, just to try out the new mechanics, a year or so ago. Nothing seemed off kilter, the pc's are balanced against THAT set of monsters, not prior editions. it was actually kinda fun! For example, 4 standard Orcs with rolled HP, vs my party of now 4th level characters. We won, but took a LOT of damage- fighter got spanked for half his hp total, and cleric ate a pair of greataxe attacks, too. That was the random party of scouts from Forge of Fury. It won't take too many encounters like that to seriously drain a party of resources- which is the point. The BBEG isn't supposed to be a standalone- he's got minions, and layers of defense to weaken you first!

The simplest answer is that your friend is probably overreacting, outside of a few specific cases. The most problematic domains, of course, are 2014 ones like the Twilight cleric, which haven't been brought forward to 2024 yet.
