Game session on film?

Roleplaying is definitely not a spectator sport. :)
That's one of the great things about it, to my mind. For me (for years), it's been a terrific way to get together with my friends, trade stories and laughs, solve problems, and have fun, and everyone gets to participate.

Unless they're gnomes! :p

Edit: I take it back about bards. A friend (the same one we sent the video to, incidentally) played a really good bard recently. It was very well done. But it was a Monte Cook variant, after all.

Is he going this year? I wasn't sure. If so then it just so happens that I'm a professional videographer. So...

1) Get Piratecat to run a game and get invited into said game.
2) Videotape the whole thing.
3) Profit!

As ENWorld's other professional videographer/editor, I've thought that it would be really neat to do a "D&D Survivor" video. Get a great DM, and great players. Get a cool scenario, say about 4 hours, with lots of visuals, and neat things that will look cool on video. Every hour, there's a ten minute break where the players vote one of the PC's out of the game. At the same time, the DM gets a 15 minute recorded bitch session about how he can't believe the players blew it in that last encounter, or how the fighter keeps running from battles, etc.

Edit it all down into a 4-parter. It could be a blast. Lots of work though - cause if i were going to do it, I'd want to run multiple cameras, decent professional looking lighting, etc.

HOWEVER. Having played in game shops a few times, and a few times being there when a game isn't going on, I know that some groups just dissolve into trite repetitive humor (Monty Python quotes, ad nauseum) that makes me want to jump on their table and strangle the life out of them. Sure, have your fun, but oh my god one can only hear the same line so many times. :D...

Agreed one billion pecent:)

Has nobody here seen www.rpgmp3.com?

Not the best roleplaying in the worldever, but it has spirit and whole lot of charm when you get into it....

Maybe I've just become a really sad geek but I've listened to the first 3 hours and quite enjoyed it. Had it running in the background as I did some work on the computer.

I'd be very interested to see this. I'll take the link please.

I understand and acknowledge that a lot of any game session could be rather boring to watch rather than participate in. But I'm not really talking about doing it for entertainment so much as educational purposes. Imagine if by watching a couple of hours of somebody else's session you could observe some tips on how they handle Initiative or keep control over how long each player takes to execute their turn in combat. It might change the way you game.

The pinnacle of this would be to have a GM give an on camera explanation of the adventure he was designing. He would explain how and why he was adding each element of the scenario. Then, with the benefit of this insider knowledge, you could see how it all played out. Which parts worked great and which didn't. Particularly if you coupled this with some player commentary afterwards on what they liked and what they didn't, I think it could be very helpful, especially to newbie GM's. Hell, even include a copy of the adventure in the package too.

I realize that this is a bit of a pipe dream for the moment but I still think it would be neat.

I agree! I think the reason why I started this thread was to see other GMs "in action." How do they handle combat, what is their set-up, how do they incorporate music, etc.

I would sit and watch it with no problem if you know going in why you are watching it in the first place.

Watching might be interesting from a technical stand point ("How does this DM handle situations differently and how can I use it to improve my own game?") but I suspect boring for a newcomer or typical spectator. I've had a couple of non-gamers sit in a few times in the past to see what it was about, but they got bored after a couple of hours if I couldn't entice them to play.

The Gamers movie rules, but I wouldn't use it as a real example of play for someone unfamiliar with role-playing...a little too comedic for that use, I think.

I'm surprised no one has posted a link to that short-lived TV show that featured the Dungeon Master DM'ing to 4 "hot" babes. Anyone got that link? I can't find it.

wasn't that barsoomcore?

What about turning it into a cartoon, I would pay to buy a DVD about a campaign on one of Emperor Valerian's stories or P'Cats stories. Both are funny a hell!!

You know I would like to tape one of our games, then watch it the next day just to see how we look. I think it would be kind of funny to watch our selves and our profesional acting skills  . when we play we get into it. I might just give it a try, :( if I get a video camera...
