Geek Confessional Thread 2024 [NOW 2025!]

Yeah, Bond is kind of his own animal.

When it comes to espionage stories, there are many, many others that are more interesting (starting with Slow Horses and the Mr. & Ms. Smith TV show), but sometimes, you just want someone skiing off a mountain and then sailing away on a Union Jack parachute.

I also love that he says that England needs him. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland presumably have their own super-spies who don't go in for shaken martinis.
Exactly. There's all different types of spy fiction. Sometimes you're just in the mood for a goofy super-spy with wild gadgets and Bond does that quite well. Especially the older stuff. But if you're looking for darker, more realistic stuff, Bond is going to disappoint every time.

A good place to start is here:

Personally, I just want it over I think it is a dead franchise and should be finished, but my dad would kill me if he ever learn I think that.
Fortunately, you are not going to get your wish.

Im more of a Tinker, Tailor and Counterpart kind of guy with my spy shows myself. Bond is iconic and I was actually generally impressed in the Craig era (it wasnt all shaken martinis tho) and dispensing with the generally cheesy-ness aspects (which I know bugs some folks). So, im hoping they continue on a serial film story with serious demeanor approach.

Yeah, I liked the Craig approach as well, even if the movies became kind of uneven eventually (as each Bond series tends to do).

It is nolstalgia like so much else in life. My earliest memory of going to the movies was seeing a bond movie with my dad. I don't even remember which one. I just remember other guys sitting nearby talking to my dad and I about Bond and liking the cool gadgets.

Watched about 5 minutes of Episode, thought to myself this sucks and shut it off. The prequel trilogy wasn't great by any means, and the sequel trilogy was Space Trash. I'm burned out on SW and Marvel movies/TV.
You are of course welcome to spend your time however you want, but watching 5 minutes of a TV show does not entitle you to an opinion on it.
