GenCon 2003 in Indy -- Why it will be better

Sorry, PC. I thought Misty would know I was just ribbing her. My bad, Misty, please don't take offence. :)

I have no idea what you are referring to. Would you care to explain?

I was referring to the cradle of D&D being Wisconsin and our discussion about Wisconsin having more RPGers than other areas of the US, etc. I thought you were going to check into that after folks got back from Gencon, weren't you? :)

To all,

Thank you for your answers (especially William Ronald, Brown Jenkin and alsih2o).

BTW: It's not Milwaukee not wanting us anymore, we just outgrew the area's infrastructure for hotel rooms, with the city not being able to keep up and expand. Just like Kenosha, Lake Geneva etc. Now if we outgrow Indy......

William,

You could have taken a cab back to your room. They were at each hotel. If I had a invite to the White Wolf party, wild horses couldn't and wouldn't stop me.

Scotch eggs & Brats in Indy?? Coooooolllll!!! (It'll feel a little like Milwaukee but...No Safe House!) Anything close to that??

Also,

It will take a lot for Indy to be cleaner and friendlier than Milwaukee. They're good, decent people and it's a shame that we've left (probably for good).

Mixmaster,

Ironically, it took a while to find my friends and find out they were running an event late. I ultimately took a cab back. (I was a bit exhausted, so I slept in. Next year, the car situation and hotel situation will be better. So, watch out party goers.) I should have thought about the cab from the party.

Ironically, in the Gen Con brochure, someone mentioned that the Events Staff tried to convince the Safe House to open an Indianapolis franchise. Sadly, without success.

Oh yeah, forgot about that. I guess I will start by asking folks at Wizards if they have any sales stats.

I didn't take offense at your comments (oh, and I'm not female, though the mistake is a common one from my gender-neutral name and common feminist-seeming stance on some of these threads). Hope you didn't take offense at mine, since none was intended.

Brown Jenkin - what are a few hotels near the convention center? I heard people are making reservations already.

Thanks

Mike

Autobahn, or how to drive like a maniac and get away with it...

I've always wanted to hit GenCon since I was a young lad, reading the TSR ads (Grimslade the Magic-User, anyone?) in my comic books and dreaming of attending.

Now, there is the possibility that myself and some friends will be able to attend next year's function. The problem: We live in lovely Calgary, Alberta, Canada. A good 33 hour drive to Indianapolis by my estimates, travelling at 100 km/h. That's a long drive by any standard, even split amongst 4 people.

The question I have is this: Is there any truth to the rumor up here that some of your highways/interstates are pedal-to-the-metal fun? That is, are there roads with no upper speed limit available for cross country travel? Or is this just general ignorance on our part of your highway system? Any surprises we should be aware of, like toll booths? We don't have such a thing here, and I always see them on TV. :) Thanks!

The only state I know of with the unlimited speed limit is Montana (with a maximum practical limit of about 100mph/160 kph in good conditions.)

Speed limits on state roads and toll booths are pretty much left up to the individual states. There's usually some way around a tollway, at least around here in Chicago.

Saint Louis would have been a better choice, IMNSHO, though. So would Minneapolis. I haven't been in the Rosemont (Chicago) convention center and adjacent hotels to fix in my mind if they have enough room. They probably would be too expensive for a gaming convention, anyway--the thing is packed nearly all year as it is.

Where in Minneapolis would it be? It's a major airport hub, and in the center of the continent (Canuk accessible!) but the constant construction downtown (combined with one-way streets, and draconian laws/police) would get to people if it was at the Target Center or the U of M...

No offence on this end. I guess PC was just being cautious. Sorry bout the gender thing. Let me know if you get any of that info. I'd be very interested to hear it. Keep in mind, though, that current sales figures won't take into account the legions of gamers using old editions with no intention of switching to newer versions (D&D and otherwise). :)
