Getting Art for your Homebrew

First Post
I have a fairly well developed homebrew. I spend quite a bit of time on it, though it is not and will never be a commercial thing. As a result, I can spend some money on it, but not that much. So far, I've been ripping images off of deviantart and the like. However, this is time consuming and produces images that are a compromise.

Where I can get reasonably priced artwork on commission? B&W rough sketches are more than enough, as long as the actual artwork is good.

What other solutions have you world-builders used (short of learning how to draw or soliciting a friend?)

There's a very friendly and useful forum over on the WOTC boards where you can solicit drawings of PC/NPC characters; especially if you can provide something CLOSE to what you want, they'll modify it to match your desires.

I asked for a grippli wizard in particular colors, modified from a grippli assassin, and it was splendid; in less than 48 hours someone had produced exactly what I asked for.

For a not-to-be published homebrew, I've mostly used clip art CDs or collections (Dover Press has a lot of old woodcuts & paintings that are often usable).

Commissioned, good artwork can be surprisingly pricey.

Hit up your local college and find the art department. I can tell you from experience that art students need money and supplies to make art and generally have no way of getting it. They may willing to produce you a whole notebook full of art for surprisingly little in return, because if they're serious about learning they'll need to do different styles and genres of art to learn everything. Offer to buy them pencils, charcoal, and some nice art paper and you'll have them eating out of your hand in no time.

In fact you don't even need to leave these forums to request art. The only downside is that are only a few artists so wait times can be a bit. The art request thread is over in the Media lounge.
