ZEITGEIST Gillie Dhu... doomed from the start? (in the Pathfinder version)


Gillie Dhu's hedge maze (as depicted on page 38) starts with at least 8 squares on fire. If the PCs do nothing but watch him try to extinguish the flames, he'll take 8+6+3+1=18 damage over the first four rounds (out of his 27 hit points). This is assuming he places himself adjacent to the most squares on fire, the fire does not somehow spread, and he's not restricted to exiting a hedge from the same face he enters it (as would be the case should his Hedge Meld ability truly act like Meld Into Stone).

How did other DMs change this encounter so as to not make it a laugh?
