Girl Gamer Stereotypes...or lack thereof?

Men and women all over the world are attracted to whatever the locals consider foreign. It's exotic and 'interesting'. There's nothing better a person can do to up their odds than move to another country where their accent and or appearance will stand out.

Hmmm... Do you know of a job for a trained physicist (Master's Degree equivalent) in SF? My military days end on the 30th of this month... ;)

Gamer Girls are a myth and don't exist, just like unicorns. ;)

What!??!!? :( :(

Unicorns don't exist?! Next you're going to tell me there is no such thing as fairies and that dragons "are not real".

And wait...I'm a girl (well...maybe I'm a touch old to be called a girl...) but I game.... so I don't exist either?!?

At least I get to live in another dimension then, with all the unicorns :D

Now see there's the problem...

During the late 90s our mayor put everything into dot-com... They used every excuse in the book to evict businesses and people who weren't about tech, or who didn't have a high income or high revenue.

Then the dot-com crash hit, and now we have a lot of vacant lots.

San Francisco's always been a boom-bust town since it's founding days in the early mid 1800s. Right now it's in a bust and you can expect to last around 5 years or so. It's dragged the bulk of the Bay Area with it.

There are no jobs here. Just massive unemployment, growing vacancy on both the housing and commercial sides, a serious homeless problem, and a slowly rising crime rate.

You are about to enter another dimension. One of sight, sound, and gamer stereotypes. You are about to enter.... the EN Zone.

Oh well... Come to think of it, maybe I should wait until at least after the current recall vote over there... ;)

[continued hijack] arcady - I just like reading your posts - they're a definite different opinion - glad you came back on a more regular basis...

Yeah, Sacramento's been hit almost as bad as SF - combined with the government actually not spending money like it was water, and it's much worse than is talked about in media, or understood in different states (exhibit 1: the Recall Gray Davis Slam-Dunk Initiative) [/hijack]

My wife (Tory Adore) I guess is in the Gamer Girlfriend category - she plays because I found a mature group at work (computers) that was fun. She's a rabid gamer - she really gets bent outta shape when the game is cancelled. :)
But in the 80's, she REALLY wanted to try D&D, but as she says, "Back then they wouldn't let her (a girl) play."
So she's loving gaming, after being interested (but denied) for so long.

Where were these all female groups when *I* was in high school gaming? Damnit! :)

The only girls that gamed that I knew in high school were girlfriends of gamers, and most of them were quite strange. Well, there were only a handful, but still.

I would have played Bubblegum Crisis, or BESM every week if I got to game with cute, giggly Japanese girls. Ok, this is getting off topic. :)

You know, it occurred to me at lunch....

Gamer girls:
Don't wear make-up
Into non-traditional activities
Have an unusual circle of friends
Generally have lots of guy friends

GAMER GIRLS ARE LESBIANS!!

*ducks*
:D

Hmm, I have been gaming for a good 25 years now. I have gamed with several groups and at two different colleges – one mid-sized school, the other fairly large (the University of CT)… in all that time, I have gamed with a grand total of one woman. She was actually a pretty good gamer and a very attractive woman, though she got into gaming through her boyfriend (now husband) Most of the guys I have gamed with I would say definitely fall into the comic shop/heavy to obese/ underachiever /rarely (if ever) date stereotype. I am married with a young baby, and one other guy is married with two kids. We are the exceptions to at least the underachiever stereotype.

But, I have rarely seen gamer girls at any of the local stores, unless they are with boyfriends. Some of the other guys in my group have gamed with women, but they were usually wives of gamer types as well. And, a few years back, before I met my wife (who does not game, but says she is interested in learning – though I sometimes think she says that to humor me...) I tried to get a group together on Sundays and one of the people that responded was a lesbian (yes, for real). However, soon after that, I found a job that required sweatshop hours out of me and I had to get out of gaming.

I would love to find some female gamers, as I thought our group did a great job when we did have that one woman in the group… though, I do think some of the guys were in awe of her, as they were not used to being around women. (Not to the point of drooling, at least that I saw…) And, she did add a different perspective than we were used to and added to the role-playing dynamic.

Every girl gamer I have known thinks of themselves as an iconoclast.

In my gaming circles, nearly half of us are female. My Friday game has 3 male 3 female players plus me, and my Thursday game has 3 female, 4 male players, or so. I don't know any who wear makeup to game, although some do to work, but we range from mid 20s to early 30s. I don't remember when I last played a game without at least 1 female in it, it's probably been close to a decade.
I don't find any particular commonalities among body types for female gamers, just like 'real life' people, everyone is different. Of course, I've known a lot of them. I'm of the opinion that my wife is the prettiest, but that's just me.
Guelph is a very good place to game.
