Basically anyone who makes a Psionic class for D&D will get no more that 40% of Psionic fans pleased... AT BEST.
the different thematics could likely live with fairly well as different sub classes.
mechanics and resources are far harder
If we are not enlightened tattoo covered esoterics with a love of crystals, what even are we doing.
it should be one option just to make it, unlike wizards who have way too much of a consistent fashion taste.
also the end point of a tattoo-covered esoteric is to become made of crystal.
got to get that tetrax body

I actually liked the concepts that Bruce Cordell came up with for Psionics back in 3.5e, it actually did give Psionics a bunch of it's unique flavour.

And yes it was a mixture of New Age concepts with crystals, Victorian Pseudoscience with ectoplasm, Asian Mysticism such as Yoga (Siddhis, where some of the ideas of psionic disciplines and powers come from) and Tulpas (Astral Constructs), as well as the Far Realm (which Cordell introduced to D&D).
if tulpas are to be used I want reference to the concept real history as it was derived from a meditation technique towards enlightenment, might as well let people learn something.
So, a Petrosapien like Diamondhead instead of a Shardmind from 4e? :)
he is basically perfect for the average dnd party

I never could figure out what crystals had to do with psionics. My train of thought stops at a completely different station.
Crystals --> Rocks --> Earth magic --> Dwarven Druids.

I'm more likely to use crystals as spell foci for druids than for mentalists and psions.
There is the Metebelis Three blue crystal in Doctor Who, which is a psionic focus. It’s from 1973, Doctor Who is usually a pretty good reflection of pop culture concepts for the date.

WotC doesn't need to publish a psionic handbook yet but "creating a disctraction" would be enough. My suggestion is to publish in D&D-Beyond something like "playtesting classes" working like "pilot episodes" and they would introduce classes with special game mechanics: the psionic manifesters, the martial adepts or the incarnum soulmelders. Then the players would be too busy creating homebred ideas to ask when they will be published.

I would like to imagine psionic ardents working as agents and spokemen of the "egregore", a collective mind or like this. This entity proclaims to be the true voice of the masses, and they could promote more democratic regimes, or to provoke revolutions to establish its own tirany.

Other idea is there is a plane like Duskmourn and the infernal power who ruled this abducted people from the region of Tyr (Dark Sun) during centuries but these weren't so easy to be controlled. There was something like a rebellion and different infernal powers were overthrown. Now the descendents of these Athasians have discovered the way to travel to other D&D worlds but their punk-like look is too weird for the natives of other wildspaces.

I like the idea of using astral constructs like a exosuit or powered armour. An example could be Isako Ichiki/Armour from Marvel comics. There was a class, the aegis, published by a 3PP.

sorry whenever I hear egregore I think of the fungus from Destiny.

no idea whether we would even be able to get one psionic class let alone two ardent and psion where different in the past.

yes we need at least something to have that mind armour as an option

We can agree the ardent can't be only a cleric or paladin with a pool of power points but it needs its own mark of identity.

Maybe they don't work with the clergy in the traditional way. They could be worshipper of deities from a different wildspace, for example pantheon from Oerth in Krynn, or a "dead" deity, or a quasideity like a legendary hero (for example the king Arthur and the knights of the round table). Or they don't work only for one deity but for vestiges or alternating, something like the vestige binders. With these pacts they could enjoy powers from a special list, or a metapsionic feat for powers from that list.

The astral constructs could be used as cannon fodder. Maybe when an astral construct loses all the hit points the psionic manifester suffers a level of exhaustion.

I was onder the assumption the ardent and the psion where different classes yes

That looks more like "force armor".

But like Astral angels manifesting a form of force within the Material Plane, it is fine if an astrally-originating construct manifests an ethereal force within the Material Plane.
