"Good morning, Major! You're looking well today."
"I feel awful."
"Well, it looks like a lovely day!"
"It's humid."
"That's a very nice sweater you're wearing."
"It itches."

"Life stinks."
"MY POINT!!"

Gnomes are fun. They just are. And that's all that matters. They deserve more than any other race, except the traditional humans, elves, and dwarves, to be in the Player's Handbook.

Anyone who thinks half-orcs deserve it more is just wrong. Half-orcs, if any of the core races are to be removed from the PHB, deserve to be the ones who get booted to the Monster Manual. They're too rare, or nonexistent, in most settings to be worthy of a spot in the PHB, unless that spot is just excess space left over to fill with whatever.

Gnomes may not be in Dark Sun/Athas, but neither are half-orcs. At least gnomes are a significant race in other campaign settings though, whereas half-orcs are almost always very minimal in presence/importance.

Except in Eyros, but Eyros isn't an official setting, and it's far cooler than anything Wizards of the Coast could slap together itself (they had to go begging for setting ideas from other people as a lame gimmick in order to get a new setting that didn't suck). Cuz Eyros was built by EN Worlders. :D :p

......And even in Eyros, gnomes are in a position to almost be the secret masters of the human/orc/half-orc Sovereign Dominion of Eyros..... :]

I, personally, have always liked gnomes. I don't think a race has to have a well-defined and defended niche to be interesting to play.

I knew the ENWorld mods would have some common sense. :D

I resemble this remark. *points at sig*

Well, some of them. :p

Gnomes ala 3e "magical wee folk" as completely superfluous, unfortunately.

- short guy shtick? Halflings got it, ala LotR fame.
- magical shtick? Elves favoured class is wizard.
- hardy little bastard shtick? Dwarves got that, too.

The main problem with the 3e gnome is that it wasn't supposed to be there - until Lockwood, I believe, drew up a tinker gnome with a big honkin' blot-thrower. Gnomes were sold to WotC as a tinker-style culture with technoilogy, and ended up as a rip-off of half the races in the PHB. Then, 3.5 sticks them in as bards (wth?) and further dilutes the gnome race. WotC dropped the ball bad with gnomes, IMO.

So, with 4e regulating gnomes into another book, I say: so be it! Unless I see a tinkersmith base class in the PHB alongside gnomes, I don't really care. Besides, in the mythological sense, gnomes are similar enough to dwarves that I don't really care from that angle either.

cheers,

The WotC poster who mentioned hearing about the PHB, DMG, MM every year at a seminar also said that it was basically confirmed that it would be the gnome at the same seminar.

It's not quite 100% confirmed, but I think it's pretty certain at this point.

I was at this seminar (Saturday's). And Bill did NOT look happy when this was brought up. The dev (I wish I could remember which one… it was the one standing in the middle with the goatee) said something to the effect of "well gnomes not being in the PH was leaked on ENworld so I can say that right?". And then went on to indicate that just because they were not in PH1 right now that it did not mean they would not be in it. And that if it wasn’t then it would most likely show up in PH2 or 3.

Death to gnomes! *dance*

Gnomes, can't live with 'em, can't shoot them out of a catapult. Oh wait . . .

I got no problems if gnomes are dropped (or launched). Didn't seem like they were all that unique or interesting enough to play anyway. YMMV

i have a player who i have never known to play a gnome say if gnomes arnt in the PHB then 4e is a no go with him. and knowing the player he isnt jokeing . its odd but theres some players that it just doesnt site well with takeing an icon out like that. like gnomes or not for a lot of players they are part of what makes d&d what it is ..myself i see them belonging more then half orcs even though i have played a few of em.

Out with the half-breeds and the gnomes; the Tolkien Quartet is sufficient for the core.

You're.....aware that Half-Elves pretty much originated with Tolkien, right? And Half-Orcs too.....

And halflings aren't even like hobbits anymore.....

I'm a fan of the wee folk, including Gnomes, but I recognize my interest probably isn't mainstream within the hobby.

I especially like the Gnome Titans of KenzerCo's HACKMASTER game.
