Gnome Warlord (re: Modern Major Gen-eral)

So we need a leader in my party, and I've decided ot try my hand at Warlord for the first time. Gnome seems to be a good option, so I'm looking for build advice.

Stats: I'm thinking of having Str first, but both Int/Cha at 14, racial bump to 16.

We have two controllers and a Paladin. I am currently a Barbarian, but we're getting a rogue soon, and we need a leader (we're getting smashed hardcore).
I'll build him when I get to my books. Pre-advice would be welcome, as I've never touched a warlord before.

Hardcore advice I may be shy on, but if you're promoting both Int and Cha, the Resourceful Presence may be useful to you, as it uses both of those stats.

Str is a must, since for your abilities to help your allies, they usually have to hit.

While you might be tempted to keep Int and Cha even for a Resourceful warlord, I read that favoring one or the other is more effective.

If I might ask, are you taking gnome just for the stats, or for story reasons?

While damage will never be the forte of a warlord, I couldn't believe how much reach helped the inspiring warlord in my first 4e game.

Interesting choice. With no Str bonus and small size, you are kind of limited as far as your own damage is concerned. Also, you are effectively -1 to hit behind the races with a Str bonus.

I think Resourceful was a good call, and I'd load up on powers that exploit your higher secondary stats. Things that grant attacks to your Rogue would be nice, so he has an extra chance to get his sneack attack damage in. For sure I would make Weapon Expertise a priority, since you will have a tough time milking an 18 out of a Gnome without ruining the potential you have with the two secondaries.

Were this my character, I'd go:
Str-17
Con-10
Dex-8
Int-16(+2 Racial)
Wis-10
Cha-16(+2 Racial)

Bumping Str every level and alternating the other two. Could be a fun time with this guy...

I have no crunch recommendation, but as for fluff, I would imagine this as a mixture of the Gnome from the D&D 4e videos and the Gnomes and the Nac Mac Feegle (also known as the Pictsies) from the Discworld

You can't go wrong with battle cries such as:

"They can tak' oour lives, but they cannae tak' oour troousers!"

"Ye'll tak' the high road an' I'll tak' yer wallet!"

"There can only be one t'ousand!"

"Ye bloustie ol' callyack that ye are!'"

Well, having played a Resourceful up through level 7 (so far), I'd say you definitely take note of your party composition & play style. Warlords really need melee allies to work some of their best. So if your Paladin is Str, and your Rogue is a melee monkey you'll be okay, but if it's a Chaladin and a Shuriken tosser, you may be up the proverbial creek as far as feeling useful.

The resourceful presence action point bonus is exceptionally nice, though, for area attacks, adding on lots of bonus damage (Int mod + 1/2 level) to multiple targets. So this can be excellent with the right controller builds & sorcerers.

If you look at the suggested Resourceful build, you'll notice they give you some ranged powers as well. This can be nice for occasional versatility, but sometimes it can be a bit unwieldy switching between your melee and ranged weapons. The Heavy Thrown weapons all have +2 proficiency, and this coupled with a 16 Str will start to feel the "miss" a bit.

Also, I've found that many, many of the encounter and daily powers end up being situational with this build (although, maybe that's mostly how I've been picking them?) So you'll want to make sure you've got at-wills that you won't get tired of using, and that you're willing to maybe go that extra bit to set up the situation where your bigger powers apply. I find, too, that I've ended up being a little bit good at a lot of things, but not really good or the best at any one thing.

Bottom line, though, is think about what you want to bring to the group.
- If you want to give everybody a good healing boost, go Inspiring.
- If you want to give strong damage and tactical boosts, go Tactical.
- If you want to do a little of both, go Resourceful.
- If you want to be a psuedo-striker, go Bravura.

Hope this helps!

interesting.

So the Leader Role really depends on how one wants to round out the party. Ie: how do you build the perfect party?

What is the perfect party?

I think with this build I'll be doing a lot of giving other attacks, and doing things to grant more attacks. The little guy should have a cane that lets him hit, maybe a sabre or something.
Too bad Warlords have to be Str: it'd be more interesting to have a DEX build for the gnome (little guy, wirey) with a rapier, but oh well.

That said, I think Mounted Combat is a must, simply to give a Warlord some interesting options, as my powers are going to be focused on backing up the Defender or Strikers, or inspiring the Wizard.

EDIT: is there a preferred Warlord PP? My Barbarian is aiming for Dreadnought or Iron Vanguard, and the conventional wisdom is these are the best PPs for what he does. Is the same true for a Warlord?
Maybe it, like the Presence, is based upon my party's tendencies.
