A Kickstarter launches in March 2026.

IDW Games is launching a roleplaying game based on its line of Godzilla comics. Godzilla; The Roleplaying Game is designed by Jervis Johnson. Mark A. Latham, and Gav Thorpe. It's a bit unclear whether players will be playing as iconic Toho kaiju or as people trying to halt kaiju in their tracks. However, the game system will use a standard deck of cards rather than dice to determine checks.

Previews for the new game will be at PAX Unplugged, so we can expect to get more information later this month. A Kickstarter will launch in March 2026 to support the new game, with fulfillment to follow later that year.

Notably, this is the first new game published by IDW Games in five years, and the company (which is tied to the IDW comics publisher) has plans to launch other licensed games in the near future.

If they don't have modes for both playing as Godzilla and as people trying to stop Godzilla it will be a wildly missed opportunity. They definitely need to have the option for playing other kaiju so you can have a kaiju fight.

If you can't do this, why even bother?

From another article I read on this topic you play people trying to fight the monster threat. I do agree it is a missed opportunity. I will still check it out to see how it compares to my Godzilla stats:

Godzilla (Legendary)
Godzilla (Earth)

I always turn King of Tokyo into an RPG, and annoy the other players by insisting on speaking in character (I'm always Gigazaur) and on declaring my own win condition, which is always to finish the game with the most power-ups. My Gigazaur is generally a pacifist, and it really cheezes the others off that I occasionally win by the actual rules, as well, usually by unexpectedly acquiring 20 victory points in my quest for more abilities.
