i'd really like a decent space flight sim... with some combat and other stuff.

One of my personal favorites has always been the Independance War series; it's a touch dated now though... 1 came out like 3 years ago, the sequal last year.

I-War was/is really good. It simulates space-flight much more "realistic" than any other game I know.
It had also an interesting storyline (and actually, this story was not a single "line", there were several outcomes possible!).

Older games (be sure to have an old Graphics Board that works with the old DOS SVGA Standards) like TIE Fighter, my absolute favorite in mission design and story development, come also to mind... :)

From the newer ones, I don`t know any. I believe there weren`t so many in the last few years...

Space Combat Sims I've known....

X-Wing: Not very realistic, but it works like an airplane sim for the most part (except there's no bank or yaw controls; you just turn), but hey, you get to shoot TIE fighters!! What more do you want? There's a Win95 version out there. You get access to X-wings, Y-wings, A-wings, and B-wings.

TIE Fighter: Somewhat like X-Wing, but it's got a better HUD and a wider array of ships and loadouts. You get to shoot X-Wings! You can fly TIE fighters, Interceptors, bombers, the Starwing Gunboat, the TIE advanced and defender, and the Missile Boat.

X-COM Interceptor: Controls are somewhat like X-Wing, but it does include vector control thrusters (so you can slide around) in the later game; you can also design your own spacecraft (within limits). I found the game somewhat short; it's not all space combat. Once you've done all the research you can pretty much win the war. There isn't much replay value, however.

Some I Don't Have:

The Descent series presents null-G flight, but it's generally indoors. Only Descent 3 has outdoor combat, and I don't think you leave the planet's surface.

X-Wing Alliance dates from 99-00 and is a 3D game. You eventually get to fly the Falcon into the Death Star II and blow up the reactor! Beats the trench run all cold.

Hope this helps!

realism is overrated

Independence War 2 I believe was the last one released. Haven't played it, read that it's good. Same goes for the first game.

The whole Wing Commander series is good (the main line not the offshoots, except for Privateer which is good). Prophecy is the most recent and the only one really designed for Win95, all the others were DOS games (3 and 4 should be easy to run on modern PC's however). If you look for WCP get the gold edition if possible and.

The X-wing series is also really good (XW, TIE, XvT, XWA). There is a collection called X-wing trilogy or some such, which has X-wing, TIE Fighter, X-wing Alliance and a demo of X-wing vs. TIE Fighter (actually the third game), all of them are Win95 versions so shouldn't be to much trouble.

Then you have the the Freespace games, which is another good series. The first was titled Descent Freespace, which had an add on called Silent Threat, the second was simply Freespace 2.

THey're all old but you can't really go wrong with any of them, except maybe XvT which was a multi player game.

Descent was great, too. It is not a Space Flight Sim, but it is "your ultimate 3D experience" :). It is the only 3D Action Game I have a fair chance of winning. For most people, it is to much 3D...

Back about... oh... 4...5? years ago, when the "home-level VR" craze was so strong, there was a guy in the mall who had all sorts of setups... including a tilting cockpit/full 3D helmet/joystick&throttle&feet control setup, all rigged up to a computer running Decent 1 or 2... That was some of the most fun I ever had, until I started to feel seasick (Not something I'm normaly prone to, I might point out...). Then I got my ass handed to me in some VR-Duke Nukem 3D by the guy demonstrating it.

Also, I'll cast a second vote for X-Wing Alliance... The game is just too fun for words. It's not the most realistic, nor does it have the most photorealistic graphics (It's like 2 years old), but it's FUN. You can fly tons of different types of ships, from fighters to assorted transports and gunboat type ships... and you can even man the turrets instead of flying, if you prefer.
