Got Ghostwalk!

You are most welcome! On the island country of Xaphan, controlled by vampires, Orcus is the main god. It is listed as 95% undead. So yes, undead do willingly worship Orcus.

I brought that point up since the BoVD says that no undead serve him willingly, he just makes them work for him through manipulation.

It irks me that the same author worked on both this and the BoVD, and the facts still contradict themselves...

Buy the book! You won't be sorry.

I have every intention of buying the book, and I'm sure it will be a most excellent product (what I've seen so far looks very nice indeed). It's just that in regards to this separate little project of mine, things like this are driving me nuts.

In defense of this stance on Orcus; Ghostwalk is a truly unique setting, and ghosts in general contradict those of the MM or Monsters of Faerun book. And as far as contradiction and Orcus, he is the Roman version of Hades, and seen as either vile or beneficial (of course not the same Orcus, or is he?) Another angle to work, if somehow Orcus of the game were a more twisted splinter or twin of Hades, filled with hate and malice, ruling the dead in a different way.

Still no good. I'm working under the assumption that things are holistic, and that there is only one Orcus out there (I could go into that more, but that'd lead to a whole other debate).

That's the real-world etymology, but I'm not writing a guide about that. I'm writing a guide to the in-game history of the D&D Orcus.

I applaud your efforts, Orcus has always been my favorite ultimate bad guy in the game.

I see. I wish you the best of luck, I would love to see what you have so far. Ghostwalk is a great setting, although I fear it might place a monkeywrench or three into your history of Orcus. Now he has a specific race of demonic servitors to figure in.

He is just that cool, isn't he?

A Brief History of Orcus is here on the Necromancer Games site (my eternal thanks to Clark Peterson, our own Orcus, for hosting it there). Looking over it now though, I keep seeing the various errors and omissions I made, hence the revised version I'm working on.

Nah, a specific demonic servitor race is no problem. He had that before with his Visages from Dead Gods. Monte Cook just seems to love all things Orcus also.

It's surprising to see a demonlord saying niceties about another demonlord. What sort of political trick are you in ? ;)

Plus the Zovvut demons from the Monster Manual 2 (well, not that specific, but it's alluded to they were created by him); the Demonic Knights from the Tome of Horrors, and the Skulldugger from Armies of the Abyss. He's got a very creative mind. That guy is not only a demonlord and a big bloated goat-furry, he's also an artist!

(By the way, "orc" and "ogre" owe their names to him as well.)

Well, fire just isn't working as a portfolio for me. I mean, Baator has Hellfire, and the Inner Planes have elemental fire, but no one ever thinks of Abyssal fire, you know? So I'm trying to make inroads with some of the more successful demon princes. :D

You have to think outside the box when making new undead, that's for sure.

Hmm, didn't know ogre did also.

If it helps, in Ghostwalk, Orcus is said to be a powerful demon who gave up power for mortal worship, thus becoming a rather nasty god.

I just now noticed this post of yours. I'm curious exactly what that line means. He was a powerful demon, who then gave up power, and that made him a god (presumably more powerful than before)??? That sounds all kinds of contradicting...
