Gotta Vent

Balgus

First Post
I just gave a Final presentation today, worth 35% of my overall grade. I finished my portion of the slides a week ago and one member volunteered to compile the presentation. She emailed out the final presentation slides and asked for us to check our slides to make sure everything is OK.

*1 - My slides were out of order and my name was mispelled

How you can misspell that? It was on every email correspondence we have sent since the term started... and we have done three projects together before this one. I dont know. OH well, small tomatoes - no big deal.
She then makes changes for the next week and sends it out 8 more times for us to check. I checled three more times and then assume that the rest will the same. She fiddles with the slides up to and including the day its due - and into the class where we are suposed to present. We go third out of four groups.

*2 - When we go up to present, my name is missing from the opening slide, and she doesnt introduce me - so I do it myself and say - oh she accidentally erased it... no bigee

*3 - We go through the presentation as rehearsed and she rearranged my slides because she thought it would be better that way... WTF! My slides - my order. What does she know about the bdget and forecasting?

*4 - As I was presenting, I found that she deleted three rows of my spreadsheet and now I am missing my forecast. I move to thenext slide and the Prof asks "Where did you get that?" I explained that t his slide is SUPPOSED to have three extra rows that has the Net income, and from there, I made my projections into the next five years.

*5 - After the presentation, I asked "What happened to my slide?" and she responded "I don't feel bad for you, I told you over and over again to check your slides to make sure everything was OK!"

I looked through my copy of the presentation and everything was there. I asked to see her copy and she just ignored me.

After class ended, I talked to the professor and told her what happened. She thought it was odd that I would make such a dumb mistake. I showed her my spreadsheet and how the chart was supposed to look, and she said that it makes sense now.

She screwed me five times in one day... This may sound paranoid but "This was sabotage!!" But what I dont get is why? It doesnt help her grade any, and it kills my grade.

So I had to vent. Thanks yall for the ear.

Edit: took out name

Professor was actually really understanding. Dont know how her grading will go tho, we'll see when grades come out. But from I got by talking with her, she would take into account.

If not, i will appeal my grade to the Dean. As of right now, I didnt want to go that far, but after thinking about it, she started it, and if I take this to the ethics committee, something's gotta happen.

Sigh ... bummer. :(

Maybe you can do a "make-up" presentation (on a slightly smaller scale) so the professors, etc. can see that your work is not really reflected in the overall picture that came out?

Or something ....

Yeesh.

Ahh- kinda think that checking the slides for your presentation was your problem, but you were right to trust her to get it the way you expected. Its kinda a.... trust your partners, but double check their work and expect them to do the same for and to you thing.

Sorry it went so bad, hope it all works out for you.

I hated group projects in college. If you're not saddled with slackers, you're contending with control freaks who resent anyone who disagrees with their viewpoint. Take my advice, volunteer to do the editing on the next group project you're assigned.

Would that I could. like you said, she was a control freak.

Plus, I have five classes: four presentations, three papers and three finals this week. It is almost impossible fo me to compile all these projects. Eventually you have to trust others wont screw you over.

I take this as a lesson. Worse grade I can get is a C. Sure it lowers my GPA some, but I will never work with her again. And hopefully, after I graduate, I wil never see her again. Or if I do, I hope its at the ends of a business deal, so I can tell my associates what kind of person she is. Dont wanna ruin her reputation, but just make it hard enough where she has to really work to gain trust...

If she can get your final grade to drop lower than hers, she does come out ahead in class ranking. Other than that it could have something to do with social groups / cliques. Perhaps she knows one of your Ex's

Why not? she tried to ruin your life through your class grade. Her actions are unforgivable and I'll just skip the rest of my advice since it will be grandma unfriendly.

Having run a university library for two years, I've heard your problem over and over from students. Good people who do their work only to get stabbed in the back by a group member.

The only positive thing I can say is that you're teacher has heard and seen it before, and so your situation is nothing new to them. Typically instructors give two grades for a preso - one on individual contribution and another for the group. The final grade is a blending of the two.

Check with the instructor to make sure they know that you were on the up-an-up in regards to final checks before the preso, but that the coordinator either ignored your instructions or didn't care. Make print outs of e-mails, or offer to forward the messages if asked to do so.

Group work = CYA :]
