I think one of the greatest moments was in a Ravenloft game. We had gone into the castle of Azalin, the lich-king of Darkon who had been transformed into the new incarnation of Death himself. In the final showdown my undead hunter cleric is attacked by Death and the scythe gets a crit hit with a natural 20. The DM decides that a save is necessary. I failed horribly by rolling a 1 !!! The DM smiles devilishly and states that I fall to the ground, lifeless. The battle continues and someone comes to check on my character. "I think he's dead! No pulse" they say as the DM passes me a note. "Are you sure" I stated as my now Vampire cleric rises to everyones horror.
He's still my favorite character, but he's a much better NPC now.

Clockwork Golem
A kobold monk running around in a mad panic, trying to pull a undead patchwork cat off his face. It was the pet of a necromancer, kept in a treasure chest and trained to spring on anyone who opened it.
Lasted all of thirty seconds befor cleric came in, turned undead, and blew the 1/2 HD undead kitty into nothingness.
Not quite as cool as it would have been if he'd failed his fort save against its paralyzing touch and been eaten before the party could rescue him, but I'll take my slapstick where I can get it.

The Skytato:
A recent campaign of mine involved Goblins who had learned to build blimps and were using them to wage war on a nearby group of druidic Elves... when describing the blimps (which none of the characters had ever seen or even heard of before) I descibed them as "looks like a small boat suspended underneath a large potato looking object". One of the party members (a professor) began to theorize that the balloon was actual a very large potato (potatos being naturaly boyant) that, due to its size, was able to lift the boat up into the air. He then went on to state that perhapse the clouds that we see in the sky are actualy the result of titanic potatos crashing together high up in the mountains, and thus were nothing more then mashed potatos.

The dwarf and the druid were fighting over a magic crystal and the dwarf was winning. He did the honorable thing and gave the druid one last chance to give it back before he finished him off. The druid threw it into his bag of holding. This kind of crystal does not like to be extraplanar. The resulting explosion pulverized both combatants, blew a crater ten feet deep and thirty feet across in the middle of town and injured many NPC spectators. As a beginner, I did not expect this.

The campaign is a modified Faerun with airships setting (I got the Bastion Press book, and love it), so the 3rd level party is currently running through the woods trying to escape an airship that's hunting them (they were onboard, until the party rogue, during a violent storm, stole the chaos diamond that the captain was keeping in his cabin). The party is almost out of the woods, and comes to a large clearing. As the party moves through the clearing, the awakened eagle in the party makes a passive spot check, and notices the large, fast moving object coming up overhead.
The party: Ohhhhhhh Sh!!!!!!!!t
Me (dm): Ok, as the airship quickly descends, you can see the hidden fire missle turrets on the bottom coming into view. You can hear the shouted words "Fire" as you stand transfixed
The party rogue: Didn't I make a disable device check on those launchers? Too booby trap them?
Me: Oh... Yeah. Ummmmm, everyone make reflex checks. To avoid the burning wreckage and all that.
The party: Ohhhhhhh Sh!!!!!!!!t
