Green Lantern Rebirth (Spoilers)

Three laterns(Kilowog, Guy Gardner, and John Stewart) on earth are going nuts(and kicking major butt, the wrong one), because Parallax has effected the will of the ring holders, Kyle...has so far, resisted. Alan Scott, is also effected, but not as bad though.

I thought Kilowog was dead. Didn't Hal kill him? How did they bring him back?

Y'know, the Yellow Fear Monster really is incredibly lame. I mean, Johns could have
made Parallax a different entity from Jordan in a lot of ways that would not involve
Yellow Fear Monsters.

Other than that, I'm enjoying this series.

There was a book, Legacy, or something, where Pieface got to lay his ghosts to rest and in the process, was hunted down by Kilowog, who was brought back in a semi-undead state by Green Lanterns who'd lost to Hal Jordan and wanted vengance. Latter on Kilowog was returned to normal by Kyle.

In Joe Kelly's Green Lantern Legacy: The Last Will and Testament of Hal <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1 ="">Jordan</st1></st1:country-region> a
bunch of ex-GLs get together and bring Kilowog back as somekinda Dark Lantern
Überzombie intent on searching down and destroying Parallax. Before he could do
anything, though, Parallax gave his life in Final Night. So he was just kinda around
for awhile until Hal <st1:country-region w:st="on">Jordan</st1:country-region>'s Lost Son (actually Hal <st1 =""><st1:country-region w:st="on">Jordan</st1:country-region></st1>'s ring's AI given life by
Parallax's energies appeared, so the Dark Lantern started hunting him down instead.

Well, after the Son, with the help and guidance of Tom 'Pieface' (Hal's old buddy),
fight the JLA and the ex-GLs, he gives his life to recreate Oa and Kilowog gets his
sentience back but still in his Dark Lantern undead mode.

After the Son's 'death', Kyle's ring starts to absorb the rest of the Parallax energies
giving Kyle Parallax level powers which he uses to among others reignite the Oan
battery and resurrect the Guardians (as babies).

Kilowog's been the Baby Guardians' guardian since.

He then got restored to full-Old-Pinkskinned-Poozer-life by Ben Raab in such a dull
and lame way it is not worth an explaination.

The inability of comics to move on though, is one reason why I tend to enjoy manga. "Man, I can't wait to see how Lone Wolf gets out of this... Wait, what do you mean he's dead?"
Bad example, though, don'tcha think? I mean, he lasts a long, long time. The Cyborg 009 team was supposed to stop after the second volume...but fans demanded their return, just like Sherlock Holmes. And I can't think of anyone who would be satisfied with the Beserk Anime series ending point...thank goodness the manga continued on for a long point past it. And let's not forget Go On Forever Yamato, Dragonball (in its many forms) or Gatchman. "Jo's dead! No he's not, he's a cyborg! Now he's dead! Wait, he survived!" Should I even mention the 'G' word? :)

Personally, though, I think some manga and anime are a little TOO eager to dispatch their characters once and for all. It's almost fashionable. They don't call him "Kill 'em All" Tomino for nothing, you know. Some series have been good about avoiding this, though. For example in Last Exile,
I was really happy when it turned out that Mullin Shetland survived. I wasn't bummed about Alex, because as Scorch told me "He died the way he wanted to, screaming with his hands tight around the throat of his enemy.":)

The big problem is that American comics, by and large, suffer lots of different writers and artists, and often poorly transition between them. How many writers and artists did Lone Wolf and Cub have? Just one of each, for its entire run. How many writers and artists has Green Lantern had in the last two years? You see what I'm talking about. Compare the turnover on say, Flash, versus Dragonball over it's entire run from the early 80s to the early 90s. Dragonball, in all its forms, had one creator. With the exceptions of Baron and Waid, Flash has had significant periodic turnover during the same span of time.

I'm kinda ambivalent about Hal Jordan coming back. It may have been inevitable, it may not. I don't know. Truth to tell, I like all the Green Lanterns (well, except Guy...), and I think that as long as there's at least one of them flying around, things will be fine. I've been reading GL:Rebirth (only through #2, though; I've been ignoring posts about #3), and I'm enjoying the story so far.

I like Hal better than Kyle Rayner, but I don't have anything against Kyle. I've read some stories with him I just hated (f'rinstance, anything with Judd Winnick's name on it), and others that I thought were great. I thought he was a great fit in Grant Morrison's Justice League. I think he's a good character. If he dies by the time this is over, I'll be sorry to see him go.

I think Hal is a great character, though. It's true that he's a typical godlike DC super-hero, his feet not quite on the ground. But he's an icon, and I respect that about him. He's been screwed up big-time and I'm happy to see his problems fixed. If he's going to be the #1 GL, I can live with that. Plus I like Geoff Johns a great deal for his work on JSA and The Flash, and I'm eager to see how he does on an ongoing series about Hal.

I like John Stewart, but I've never really gotten a feel for his character. I read one story featuring him when he was apparently insane (the one with the mad Guardian, Ali-Appa-Apsa I think?); my only reference for how he behaves while he's sane is the Justice League cartoon. I've not had an opportunity to see him shine. Guy Gardner on the other hand... he came off as a total jerk in the stories I've read of him (constantly following Hal around, trying to get him into a fight to prove who's better). If Johns can make him an interesting character I might be amenable to him sticking around, though.

The thing that bothers me the most so far about GL:Rebirth though, I think, is that Alan Scott has really been sidelined in favor of John and Guy. Alan is the only Green Lantern for whom I feel a great deal of sentiment -- I like Hal, but I love Alan. As far as I'm concerned, Alan alone is "the one, true Green Lantern". He was the greatest of the 1940s mystery men, and he retains a kind of dignity that even Superman can't match, let alone Hal. For me, the ideal situation would be Alan Scott starring in the Green Lantern monthly, though I know that'll never happen.

Anyway, I'm just along for the ride. I don't really care what comes of Rebirth, so long as it continues to entertain me. Thus far, I've not been disappointed at all.

The Powers-That-Be at DC wanted to revive Green Lantern, Jones had an idea, pitched it, got accepted.

He is doing a good job tying together what has gone on in the past.
Paralax being trapped by the Gaurdians? They did the same to Krona and the Starheart.
Hal being possesd and controlled by an evil entity? He went from solid hero to grieving, murderous nutbag in 3 issues.
I like Kyle, I am curious as to what his fate will be after this story.
Sinestro being back is good. If Hal is back, his greatest enemy needs to be back.

It will be his swansong and exit out...as a Green Latern, they are doing it the proper way...by giving him props, that he has resisted the effects of the corruption, so far.

[sblock]And also possible, he might die in the process, when it reaches its conclusion.[/sblock]

I say DC should just have Orcus come along, demonic and undead hordes ablaze and obliterate all of the DC universe so they can start all over with a much better crew.

That's just me being D&D thought. :p

Why do you say that? We don't know what Kyle's fate will be at all. I don't think DC will
knock him out of the franchise, but he's not *The* Green Lantern, anymore, that's for
sure. The real question becomes, will he stay in the spotlight or fall into limbo.

The rumour mill is currently foretelling a second Green Lantern title in late 2005, most
likely a Green Lantern Corps one, which would, presumably star the backup Lanterns, but
this is 10% based on hints from DC and 90% based on speculation.
