Grim n' Gritty thinking...

hi ppl,

For those familliar with GnG.

I'm using the 3.3 edition, but lately I have looked over the revision that he made and found that I like how he dealt with critical hits in it and also that he did away with the called shots that I don't think anyone would use at low or even mid levels.

But I still like the rest of the 3.3 and don't want to use the 'life pips' he added in the revised edition. So i'm thinking of using 3.3 and the cirtical hits from the revised.

Ohh, and what do you think of using DEX as primary ability to attack bonus (both melee and ranged)?

Any comments on that from the GnG users out there??

thanks,

Revised..and altered :)

My group tends to have issues with any set of rules that take a while to explain. The revised GnG is simple to implement and smoothly adapts into the game.

I am starting an entire campaign using most of Ken Hood's work, the MA, Psionics, and GnG Revised. I have made a couple alterations to the system that make it mirror the CP2020 combat system more, specifically doubled teh number of lethal pips and the character must make FORT saves to avoid falling unconcious once they have taken more than 20 pips of damage.

At low levels it is a great boon to the players.. but it is even a greater boon to monsters...more so undead and constructs.

As to the Dex variant, I have not tried it yet, but it will be in play come next game session. I don't think it will cause any balance issues, and will even out the Giants already nasty ability to dish out massive damage.

G and G: latest edition?

Here is the G and G rules, actually located in the downloads section here on ENWORLD.

I think it's an intriguing idea. Never tried it though. And is this version 3.3? Did previous versions use HP vs. the bar? Curious to try it out, but it seems like a lot of extra die rolling....

I went with the dex version for my first game, but returned to the str version for the next. In melee, strength is king. The little guy doesn't often beat the big guy. Of course, with training etc, the little guy can beat the big guy, but that is reflected in the level/experience of the character.

Oh yeah, I went with the revised rules. There are only 7 pages (with a lot of white space) - 10 minutes to read, and you're ready to play.

We used the GnG rules afor a campaign back in 3.0 and I'm afraid to say I hated them. Everyone had to max out their strength to penetrate armour and if you hadn't (like me) you were at a serious disadvantage. Fort saves were of supreme importance and if you didn't have a good Fort save (like me) you were at a serious disadvantage. Fights tended to be decided by whoever got in the first blow which made it less interesting. There was less to-and-fro. In fact my PC was almost always knocked out by the first hit. On the one hand it increased my survivability but the drawback was I slept thru practicaly every battle.

We use G&G 3.3 in our local game as well, and the players LOVE it. One of the things, though, is we modified armor. You get half the armor to DR, and half to AC.

This is an example shown in UA, and also in the YAAARGH!! system, which was poted to this forum before. But basically, if you have plate armor, which gives +8, you get 4 points to DR/- and 4 points to AC (or dEfense, as G&G calls it)

It helps to even things out a bit.

We absolutely don't use Dex to hit with. The reason is, that makes Dex a super-stat... It's good for AC (def), To hit, A save, and half the skills? That's way too much. Keep str to hit, since it's not good for a whole lot else.

OK, thats reasenable.

That could be an interesting Idea. though it does negate a bit the whole idea that armor doesn't help you avoid damage, just soften blows...

What about the Critical Hits and the Called Shots? Do you use them as is? Do the PCs even use called shots? As I said in my first post, I want to integrate the Critical Hit system from the revised GnG...

The one with the life-pips (as I think he calls them) is the revised edition, there are somethings that I like from there, but I do not like the idea of the pips (don't know why really).

I was thinking of integrating the two system, but I still have to sit and work it out...
