Guess What?! NC Game Day VIII is September 10th!

Henry,

Sorry to hear you won't be making it...that just means we need to redouble our efforts for next year!

Have fun, all and I hope to see you and NC Game Day IX in January...I will be speaking to lots of old people in Fort "Lost-in-the-Woods", Missouri whilst most of you are having a fine throw (of the dice, minds out of the gutter).

2) I've been kicking around an idea for a "Misfit Superheroes" game that I'd like to run and I'd be willing to give it a go. If you like this idea then the PC's are as follows...

Well, it sucks that Henry won't be able to make this GameDay, but it looks like you have a fine replacement game set up to take the Spycraft games place. Sounds like it'll be alot of fun! What rules are you going to be using for this?

I owe a lot of the inspiration for this game to you, CL. Our conversation about the idea on the way to GenCon was what got the ball rolling and it's been camped out in the back of my mind ever since.

I'm going to use this as my first foray into Risus. It seems simple and flexible enough for the purpose and the mechanics won't be the focus of this game anyway. I'll let you know how it goes. And if you or Ethernaut have any tips or suggestions for me about running it, I could sure use them!

*my ears are burning*

Haven't been paying attention to this thread since I've got a baby due any day now. Alas, I wish I could be down for this game day. I'm afraid I'm going to have to wait for the spring NC game day, or maybe the winter one if I'm lucky.

But I am always willing to help out with Risus.

First off, check out Risus Mystery Men. It's a great site that is totally perfect for what the type of game that you want to run. It doesn't have much in the way of help as far as *playing* the game, but the characters and adventure ideas are wonderful.

Next, I *highly* recommend the Risus Companion. I didn't really "get" Risus until I saw the Companion. It has tons of great tips for running a Risus game, as well as loads of useful bits for other game-mastering in general.

ANother great resource is Risustalk over at Yahoo groups. It's been pretty active as of late, with some excellent rules discussions. People are polite and respectful of the different ways people play. Moreover, they're always willing to help answer questions about how to run Risus.

Finally, I offer up my my own Silverlode 1908. I have a slightly different spin on the combat rules that works very well for me, but that's mostly because I run a semi-serious game. For your game, the standard Risus rules would be just fine. The Inappropriate cliche rules are what will really make your game zing.

I will be glad to help with any questions you have in particular.

You're the bomb, dude. I'm gonna hold off on getting the Risus companion for the moment. The base rules are simple but I'm trying to wrap my brain around how things will run in practice and need to keep things bare bones for the moment. I'm currently reading the Mystery Men site and it is a great resource. Thanks again and good luck with the baby!

(One other word of advice about that: If labor progresses through the night and in the bleary morning hours they tell you "It's time to help her push," don't ask if you've got time for a quick shower. You'll hear about it for YEARS if you do.)

Ok, sure. But if you need help with wrapping your brain around Risus, just let me know. Some words of advice off the top of my head:

1. With your pre-gen characters, you should explain each cliche and give examples of what the character might be able to do with said cliche. This will help players who are unfamiliar with Risus, as well as provide a baseline fpr you to adjudacate new actions that the players come up with.

2. Sketch out a few sample combats in advance to help get a feel for the pace of combat. You'll learn fairly quickly how best to structure your NPC opponents to provide the best combat pacing.

Oh...my. I think I'd be sleeping in the basement for a month if I did that. :o

I'm definately taking this advice. I'm going to see if I can get my wife to run a sample combat or two with me tonight. Hell, if it goes well, I might just encourage her to use Risus in place of Hunter: the Reckoning for the solo game we were going to run for her.

And by the way, the sample chase and combat on your Silverlode site was excellent. It really helped me understand how things would likely go in practice. Did you find that it took some time for your players to adapt from less "description intensive" (and more crunchy) systems?

Anyway, thanks again.

Thanks. When I first discovered Risus, I was surprised that I couldn't find anything similar, that's why I developed my own. I have a bunch more that I haven't posted to the website (mostly because they don't use the iconic characters).

In every game I ran, the players had absolutely no trouble switching to the descriptive style of combat. They picked it up in the first round of the first combat. This was with three different gaming groups (and new players in each session).
