Guess What?! NC Game Day VIII is September 10th!

The only thing that I was dissappointed in was that there were a couple of "no shows" that we've still not heard from. I can't fully convey how much of a hassle it is for GM's who are waiting to start their game and having one or two players who they are not sure are actually coming. In the future I'm going to lay out a specific policy that we'll follow in terms of when your slot becomes forfeit to walk ins. Any input on this topic would be appreciated (and feel free to e-mail it to me if you'd rather not post it here on the boards).

Might want to bring this up in the "What goes into organizing a Gameday?" thread, I'm sure other people who host gamedays (like me) will be interested.

I'm glad to hear the a good time was had by all. Thaniel, Jon, Rel, Clueless, again my apologies.

On the good side, I'm told both my cars now work. :)

Hopefully, January will be a better time.

Aw heck, Henry, if you'd told me that it was just a car problem I could have come down and picked you up. Anyhow, I'm glad things are now working.

And I must say that there's a bit of irony somewhere in your .sig now. ;)

Alenda and I had a blast. It was good to see everyone again, even if we were running on fumes for the post-dinner event. I still feel lucky that I got us home in one piece.

 I missed that completely! (The irony and the event!)

Website Changes

I'm looking to do some updates to the website before the next Game Day, and was looking to get some feedback from you guys on what I can do to make it easier to use the website. Your feedback in the past has been very helpful, and I hope the site has improved in it's usability for you as well.

I've heard some question/complaints about the 'Type' on events. Currently it is one of:

Walk-In Game
This type of event is the default, and means seats will be available at the event as well as online.
Tournament
A series of games resulting in a champion (usually associated with prizes)
Reserved Game
Seats are only available at the game day. Usually used for auctioned seats.
Demo
A demonstration of the game.
Char Creation
An event where players can create their characters to be used in future events.

I know all of these aren't used, and some of them aren't real clear as to what they mean. From what I've heard, I'm planning on adding one new 'Type' to events called 'Pre-reg Only'. This type of event will only allow for on-line pre-registration for the event. Once it's full, it's full (unless someone cancels). Even if there are still seats available (it doesn't fill), anyone who shows up at the event who isn't pre-registered will not be able to get in on this game. The sheets I print out to show who has signed up for the event will not show any other seats, and reflect that the maximum number of players is the number of players that signed up.

Is this something that is needed? Would it be better to just perhaps rename some of the existing types? Or do we need more types?

Are there other things you want to be able to do for your events? I see quite a few people posting up both Character lists and other background information about their game. Would you like to be able to specify this when you're editing your event? Would you like something where you can specify the available characters for your event and allow those who pre-register for the game to choose a character? How about allowing you to upload files that get mailed out to people when they pre-register for the event?

Feel free to discuss here, or mail me in private. I look forward to your responses.

No quotes yet?

Sorry, I've been completely slammed with work this week (which is sort of a good thing). I'll post them tomorrow, either in the afternoon or evening.

I also want to give some feedback regarding the game categories. I'm already planning to have lunch with Neal in the near future but in the short term, I think the best name for the kinds of games that tend to get set up here is "open for pre-registration" or perhaps simply "open". The long time complaint about "walk in" was that it seemed to imply that you were only looking for walk-ins at the Game Day.

I'll discuss this at greater length later but that's my off the cuff suggestion.

All of the above? :)

I think that your "Open" designation would be best to replace the current "walk-in."

Seconded.

Minor suggestions on creating an event:

--On duration, put something like "Duration (in hours):" to clarify
--For maturity flags, it might clarify for some people to spell it out "Fictional Violence, Violence, Language, etc." instead of "FV, V, L," etc. Plus, for some reason, the "Maturity Guide" link gives me a 404.
--Don't know if you can do anything about this, but in both IE and Firefox hovering over a title gives the help boxes, but THEY DON'T GO AWAY if you move off of them, meaning the last thing you hovered over stays on the screen and blocks the view. Minor, but nuisance-level.

Would you like something where you can specify the available characters for your event and allow those who pre-register for the game to choose a character?

As an option, this would be great! I know that sometimes I don't have this info ready before I post the game, but would like it if I could edit it into the game afterward. Also, if I choose not to have them chosen until at the table, I wouldn't have to put them in on the site.

Also possibly a file upload area for small DOC files or JPGs if the GM wanted to provide game props beforehand. In fact, if the GM did something stupid (like say forget to bring copies of something before he came) he could download them again and print them before he came. :)
