There is a new Pope.

They've yet to announce who it is.

One would think so from the name (we wish!), but no, he's not.

Pope Benedict nee Cardinal Ratzinger, however, does have some interesting things in his background, chief among them that he was the head of the Vatican's Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, which you may recognize by its former name (before being changed by Paul VI), the Holy Inquisition.

Do with that as you will. Conspiracy theorists, professional and armchair, are having a field day already.

The last Benedict was a diplomat who immediately saw WWI as the unmitigated disaster that it was and tried desperately to stop it or at least moderate it. He failed on all points.
