Half-Elf Ranger/Invoker: Mechanically Sound or Completely Insane?

My mistake, I assumed you meant she was going to hybrid (Had to help out three of my players hybrid when PH3 was released, lol)

If she's just multiclassing, it should work well enough, but the deeper and deeper she power-swaps the more apparent the gap in stats will be, and the few controller powers she does pick up will be of limited effectiveness. If she's really dedicated to being a part-time controller, then a hybrid would really be the way to go in my opinion. She could keep her striker side with an avenger half as well.

If she's at all interested in an Avenger|Invoker hybrid, it wouldn't be that difficult to change up power descriptions; you could even view Oath of Emnity as twin strike from a fluff standpoint. If she took invoker armor prof she could keep her hide proficency, or take Armor of Faith for very little change. The only challenge being that avengers usually want a big 2h weapon instead of the two she has as a ranger, but investing the feats she would spend multiclassing into some two-weapon feats is a viable alternative. What ever works for her and the campaign ./shrug

Maybe a monk multiclass? Still a striker, good ability score synergy, but add more AOE and control, the most of any melee striker, IMO. They have lots of bursts and blasts, pushing, sliding, etc. At least that is my impression from reading the powers and reading posts about them on EN World.
THAT. is an intriguing idea.

Question: How would that work though if she's already doing two blades? An unarmed strike in one hand and a blade in the other?

Amusingly enough, Monks are entirely impliment based, and they can use their weapons as impliments. So she's good to go in that regard; and she can use her already high dex to her advantage and use the wisdom and strength as a rider.

Invoker would be bad to echoe what everyone else has said. Most notably because it would need her to weild a staff or rod, as Invokers don't get holy symbols in their implement list.

Race bonuses notwithstanding her stats are STR 16, CON 12, DEX 16, INT 10, WIS 14, CHA 12 and she's currently at LVL 5 planning LVL 6 feat. That said, she is dual-wielding melee weapons and doesnt have much problems hitting or keeping them up to date.

I think her interest is less about trying to tack on a holy symbol and new powers to compensate for existing deficiencies. Instead she wants to extend her character's functionality for AOE/Control, in the absence of a Wizard. (I killed mine off three sessions ago.)

Also what is this MID MAD people speak of?

The WIS 14 is really the deciding point here -- too low to make an effective Invoker, as wisdom is the attack stat for that class. Unfortunately, she doesn't have the stats to make her any good at any of the controller classes. Multiclassing into monk (Centered Breath) is probably the closest she can come to gaining decent controller abilities.

There's also the Warden.
It has a lot of control, is based on Strength, it's melee, and many of his powers are very flashy and kinda magical.

Ok we have got a lvl5 Half-Elf Ranger (dual wielder) w/ suboptimal stat placement that wants to dabble in controler.
-Maybe redistribute her ability scores to match her specific needs.
--Does she want to raise STR/WIS or STR/DEX?

If sliding is enough control for her try using lightning weapons (PHB1) + mark of storm (EPG - I see no reason those marks can't be refluffed for whatever world you play in) add rushing cleats if you like and you've got slide 2 on all attacks.

If she wants to slide at range try lighting weapon (main) and farbond spellblade (off) (AV2) [I assume she uses heavy blades given her low stats] and Dilettant Power (Elemental Spirits (PHB3)) take Versatile Master (lvl11) to make it a true at-will. Anyway if she goes STR/WIS any Seeker at-will can provide ranged control.

Then again an archer (DEX/WIS) ranger MC (seeker) might be yet better. You could probably change her race to elf as well.

There are probably many options that are by far better than a ranger MC (invoker) if you want to add some control.

If i understand correctly, the one function she wants out of multiclassing into a controller class is an AOE effect, since she thinks we have trouble with minions.

(I don't think we do, since my Dragonborn Two-Weapon Fighter was able to handle four in one turn, thanks to encounter powers and marking.)

Ok it's about minion sweaping...

If she has twin strike (she should) that's two minions a round.

MC monk adds 1/encounter a dead minion or more depending on level or damaged monsters.

Dilettante Power (five storms) = 1/encounter closeburst 1 enemies only
-She should go STR/DEX or get Martial Dilettante Adept Dilettante (D385) and change the ability score to WIS. With Versatile Master that is "at-will close burst 1 enemies only" all day long.

What's her dilettante power? I would say let her change it to five storms (monk close burst 1), multiclass monk, or do both. She should also pick up versatile expertise (whatever melee weapon she uses and ki focus) or retrain one of her feats to versatile expertise.
