My absolute favoritist Hollandaise

Oct 31 is the date that my wife and I got married.

Oddly enough, it being a holiday was not really a consideration in our decision to getting married on Halloween.

Our families were not thrilled with each other (and we were at odds with all of them at the time), so we decided to elope.

We are not religious people (we are reverent, introspective, and spiritual, but not religious), so we wanted the county judge to marry us.

He was out on 2 weeks vacation.

We really wanted to get married soon (we both had taken our vacation time off work to get married and only had a week to get the job done).

Though we were both raised Roman Catholic, neither of us were believers anymore, so that wasn't an option.

...but we wanted to get married sooner rather than later, so we just opened a phonebook and went down the list of churches; calling to see who would be willing to marry us on, or around, that day (which happened to be Oct 29).

Almost every church wanted you to be a member of their church and/or go through a set of counseling sessions to make sure we knew what marriage was all about.

We were about to give up hope on getting married any time soon...when a Presbyterian church with a brand new pastor said he would be happy to marry us (In a non-religious ceremony even), but he needed at least a couple of days to figure out how the ceremony was supposed to go (he had never married anyone before and I think he was somewhat intimidated).
So we got married on October 31, and all of the rest of the details of that ceremony and that day are mine and my wife’s to have and keep for ourselves.

So Halloween is our favorite holiday (and it falls between our birthdays Oct4 and Nov18)

We celebrated our ninth wedding anniversary yesterday :) :)

I love holidays. Holidays were always an excuse for busy family to get together and act like a big, loving family. They still are, and as the oldest non-senior-citizen adult, I bear the responsibility of hosting and making sure the family remembers who we are, that we love each other, and that we all have fun together.

Halloween is my favourite over all, though, for personal and faith-based reasons.

I like Halloween because the kids like it :). They are really fond of wearing costumes and hunting for sweets. And it's not a tradition that grew old on me, because I just moved to the US quite recently. As one of my colleagues put it when asked about Halloween: "For me, it's Reformation Day!" ;)

October 31st is both my personal most important religious holiday AND my wedding anniversary... so I rather like it. :)

Commercialism?

I simply do not understand hating Hallowe'en. The post-Hallowe'en dental bills, I can understand, but the giggling kids, the adrenaline rush of a genuinely good scare, the excellent excuse to get an all-night game of CoC or Ravenloft or something, it's all excellent!

As for commercialism, I don't think that too many places benefit all that much from Halloween Spooktacular Savings or anything like that. In fact there are only four lines of product I can envision getting a boost from Hallowe'en:

1) Alcohol
2) Costume Rentals
3) Candy and Confection
4) Count Chocula

I voted fence sitter.

Halloween is yet another tool of the evil confectioner/florist/greeting-card triumverate conspiracy.

Not to mention that the triumverate, with the Neo-Pagans and the Fundamentalists, have hijacked the holiday from the Irish Catholics.

But on the other hand, 'horror' and 'free stuff' are two things very close to my heart.

And I live in New Zealand, where it's more an excuse for adults to get drunk than for children to commit extortion.
