the question is as the Subject states...has anyone at all played a rogue, rogue/fighter/ rogue/barbarian...rogue without any arcane/divine class without taking the Use Magic Device skill, and how was the experience?

Sure. Many of my rogues haven't had this skill, and they did just fine.

Leave the spellcasting to the spellcasters. I'll deal with the sneaking and the traps and what not.

Most Rogues don't have the Use Magic Device skill. They do just fine without it, and are very effective characters. Having magical devices means you spent money on them, (or it counts against your GP total), and so you won't have the money for other equipment that can be helpful to a Rogue.

I played a fighter/rogue from 1st to 12th-level without Use Magic Device. It was fine, except that the campaign tended to be undead-heavy (the bane of rogues!) So just as we wound up stopping the campaign due to players moving, my rogue was thinking of picking up some ranks in UMD to help her be useful during those battles with the un-sneakable undead.

But so long as you aren't fighting undead all the time, I think a rogue without UMD does just fine.

The ftr/rogues in my newbie group don't have the skill either and the last bbn/rog I saw didn't raise it too.

It's not as useful if you can't go shopping for wands or build them yourself, hence they relied on conventional weaponry.

I'm playing a multiclassed rgr/rog right now (13th lvl, with 6 levels in rogue), and I've never put any ranks into UMD. The primary reason is a roleplaying one, since it doesn't fit the character (he doesn't have any ranger spells either, although he's high enough level to get them), and it's never been a problem.

ahhh...well, finally i think i'll be settled in going a simple rogue fighter...not to mention, i already have a few spell-like abilities (ie. darkness) so i'm quite happy...

Thank you all very much, and most appreiciate the answers, and thoughts.

Well it's probably a little late to chime in, but a guy in my group played his character from 1st to 28th without any ranks in Use Magic Device. He didn't really miss it, except against undead and things he couldn't sneak attack.

Yes. Lots. I've seen Rogues played quite a few times and only once was Use Magic Device used. I find the wording of the question rather odd; you make it sound as if Use Magic Device is a *required* skill.

It depends on the group. Our group's roguely-types usually have lots of UMD. Mine is an exception, in that he (a) is a B&E dude and (b) has a +3 Inh bonus to Charisma just to make him Cha 10.

The rest of the party wants me to put ranks in UMD, but I'm not going to. Dammit, I want to be a bouncy type, and I'll stay that way.
