D&D Movie/TV Hasbro Getting Out Of The Movie Business

Hasbro focusing on video games instead.

While Hasbro is forging ahead with its own Dungeons & Dragons video game, following the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3, the future of its film involvement is less rosy. In an article with Bloomberg featuring Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks, it was revealed that the company won't be co-financing future movies following the underperformance of Honor Among Thieves and Transformers One.

The focus is moving towards video games. Cocks said to Bloomberg, "We want to reach fans where they want to play, and increasingly that is through digital expressions of their favorite brands".

Sony and Lions Gate will continue to make movies based on Hasbro properties, but Hasbro won't be involved in the financing.

Neither did Citizen Kane. 😉

These days its online reception is fairly positive as a generational defining movie that had a lot of the most defining franchise moments for the Transformers fan base.

Citizen Kane is generally popular with boomer directors and movie critics.

Kinda boring these days ymmv.

Citizen Kane still ranks #1 on the American Film Institute’s list of greatest movies. So the point being that a box office bomb doesn’t speak to how well a film is actually regarded. It’s a weak argument to make. That is the point. You will likewise find a fairly significant numbers of “bombs” and “flops” that are held in much higher regard than the box office “successes.”

And I'm sure the AFI is really representative if the average American.

Transformers thing is based on 26 modern reviews. That's not really enough to get reliable data.

They are right it compares well to the Michael Bey movies. Opinion seemed to change on it based on those movies.

I suspect they damaged the brand as well. Gen X checked out and younger ones don't care.

And since you suddenly care here about reviews, how do the ones for Transformers One check out?

These 5 studios were not I believe WotCs first attempt at entering the video game market, but WotC may still have learned from their Larian experience and be taking a different approach this time and making a much bigger investment.

I read the surprisingly long sample from Exodus: Archimedes Engine and the setting and depth and writing is amazing in just like 3 chapters, if the game isn't buggy and mechanics are well designed Exodus is going to be the next Mass Effect success story.
First time internally, a long and mixed history of outside partners, sure. And they have been building these internal studios for years now...but the slow burn there is really a good sign, along with the talent involved.

I'm coming up on the climax for the novel, and it is a seriously wild ride. They held nothing back for complex world building.

why can't they just listen to me and return to animation; an animated movie would be awesome, they already know several prominent voice actors! Come on Hasbro, give us an animated movie, they are very well received in the box office.

unfortunate because my gaming group and I all thought HAT was actually a really good D&D movie

Bay's movies made a fortune, perhaps they should given the D&D movie to Michael Bay instead (loved the Bayformers movies, I just roll my eyes at all the hate they get online, the massive profits it made speak volumes as does the death of the franchise after he left).
